Christiern Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 I was looking for a photgraph by Ralston Crawford when I stumbled upon my name, clicked on it, and discovered that not only am I a lot older than I thought, but I am also losing my memory of people I worked with... Of course the memory loss could be due to me having worked since about age 6! Who are/were Allen Weinberg and Jonathan Wyner? When did I work with Clarence Williams, Fletcher Henderson and Bessie Smith? George Horn? Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 (edited) that's like the time I was interviewed for a newspaper article when I lived in New Haven; Bob Neloms was appearing in a concert I sponsored; I mentioned he'd worked with Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, and Charles Mingus - the article noted that appearing at the concert that night with Bob would be Stitt, Ammons, and Mingus - all of whom were dead at the time. Fortunately, the jazz audience is smart enough that I only got a few puzzled calls - too bad - would have been a hell of a concert - and Chris, you don't look a day over 95 - Edited January 21, 2008 by AllenLowe Quote
JSngry Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 When did I work with...Fletcher Henderson...? On his Prestige date? Quote
Christiern Posted January 21, 2008 Author Report Posted January 21, 2008 Oh, of course, Jim--I somehow knew it wasn't one of the Banner dates he did for the Scranton Button Factory. Quote
Christiern Posted January 21, 2008 Author Report Posted January 21, 2008 (edited) Nobody picked up that my instrument is liner notes and my most representative album is "Ikala"--Ikala? Allen, you also play liner notes, don't you? We should hook up with Ira, Dan, et al, and jam! Found the album! Edited January 21, 2008 by Christiern Quote
robviti Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 astute?! come on, you had to know something was terribly wrong from the get-go. Quote
Christiern Posted January 21, 2008 Author Report Posted January 21, 2008 astute?! come on, you had to know something was terribly wrong from the get-go. Huh? Quote
Big Al Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 You mean you haven't uplifted the field of jazz journalism? I've believed it all these years..... Quote
Christiern Posted January 21, 2008 Author Report Posted January 21, 2008 Sorry, I hadn't read that part, but I can't suddenly believe what Yanow writes, can I? Al, I believe I did uplift that field, but I quickly let go when all those bugs started coming at me. Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Scott Yanow is the most brilliant jazz critic of his generation - (writing that so it comes up on Google, and so Alfredson gets a good review) Allen Lowe has frequent sex with barnyard animals - (writing this so it ends up on my internet bio) Quote
Christiern Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 I knew that about Lowe (although Yusef Lateef told me otherwise). but I only had Yanow's word for his own brilliance. Apropos Yanow, have you noticed how his little bios seem to be on every other site? I know he's pushy, but what's up with that? Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 well, as they say, he's got a firm grasp of the obvious - and did I remember to mention that he's the most brilliant jazz critic of his generation? Quote
Big Al Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 yeah, but did he uplift the field of jazz journalism? Quote
Christiern Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 He, with help from the late Leslie Gourse, brought it down so that others might lift it up without too much strain. Quote
Neal Pomea Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Can you get me Clarence Williams' autograph next time you work with him? Quote
Christiern Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 We are no longer speaking and I don't know if it's that pedestrian piano playing or the dirty trick he pulled on Bessie. Want Benny Goodman's autograph? If so, how many? Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 We are no longer speaking and I don't know if it's that pedestrian piano playing or the dirty trick he pulled on Bessie. Want Benny Goodman's autograph? If so, how many? Ah yes, you had to learn to forge that, didn't you? I'll have to think about how many. Perhaps I can sell them to Nigerians in exchange for a share of the profits of their scams. MG Quote
Christiern Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 I signed quite a few for fans in Ghana, where The Benny Goodman Story had just had a run. Quote
