captainwrong Posted February 1, 2008 Report Posted February 1, 2008 OK, could some kind soul help me out with who is playing on what for this Frank Morgan S/T album? I love eMusic, but I hat the fact that you get no liners and they just kind of jumble line up, if they give you it at all. Dates and all would be swell too. I couldn't find the info on the web. Thanks in advance. Quote

Thanks in advance. The liner notes aren't really that helpful either, but here's the information contained therein: On tracks 1, 3, 6 and 8 Frank Morgan, Conte Candoli, Wild Bill Davis & "Machito's Rhythm Section" (whoever that was at the time...) On tracks 2, 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10 Frank Morgan, Conte Candoli, Wardell Gray, Howard Roberts, Carl Perkins, LeRoy Vinnegar, Larance Marable On tracks 11-15 Frank Morgan, Jack Sheldon, James Clay, Bobby Timmons, Jimmy Bond, Larance Marable August 11, 1956 About the recording dates of the first two sessions it says that they were recorded when Frank Morgan was 22 years old (born December 23 1933). But it also says that the session with Wardell Gray was Gray's last recording session as he died in May 1955 (at which point either Frank Morgan was still 21 or some of the given information is simply incorrect). captainwrong Posted February 3, 2008 Author Report Posted February 3, 2008 Awesome. That's a huge help. Thanks. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 I guess I hadn't come across a Wardell session for GNP. There's a Prestige twofer LP that contains material with a strikingly similar band; if it weren't in storage, I'd look to see if it is in fact identical. Quote

Not the same . The only part of that Wardell twofer that has Frank Morgan is the sextet stuff with Teddy Charles , and that's from '53 . Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 (edited) Bit confusing, the info given above. Title listings would have helped, as you never know for sure if the sequence is the same on all reissue sources. Bruyninckx sez thus (abbreviated track listings as reviewers would do): Gooch - Whippet - Bernie's - April: 29-01-55 Morgan, Candoli, Wild Bill Davis, Robert Rodriguez (b), José Mangual (bgo), Rafael Miranda (conga), Ubaldo Nieto (timb) Remainder of original LP tracks: 31-03-55 Candoli, Morgan, Gray, Perkins, Roberts, Vinnegar, Marable Remainder (tracks 11-15) not included on the original LP would be the live recordings from the Crescendo club (date as given by Kyo) first relased later on in Japan. Well, you can always try to tell the first two sessions apart by whether there's a piano or an organ playing. Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 (edited) Of course, but the other way it would still be faster and more convenient (no need to start off by comparing aurally - do we know for sure what emusic does with track sequences?). And the info is available out there after all. Anyway ... now the Cap'n knows ... Edited February 3, 2008 by Big Beat Steve Quote
Kyo Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 Of course, but the other way it would still be faster and more convenient Well, not for me. do we know for sure what emusic does with track sequences?). Yup - absolutely nothing, why would they? Anything else would mean that they'd have to DO something before putting the whole thing on their site - why would they do that? Quote

Thanks, now I remember... it's hard to keep track right now because 95% of my vinyl is inaccessible. (and I don't just mean musically...) Quote
