  1. Enablers, the whole lot of you! Lol. Well, I asked for it, didn't I? Anyway, that's pretty much what I was hoping to hear. I have most of this music on various CDs, but the thought of having it all, in order, and in a handsome set is really appealing. I was in the BMG club when Denon started doing the straight reissues of the old Savoy LPs. I picked up a lot of those, but let's face it, they are the definition of random at times. Never really upgraded, so that's why this set caught my eye. I'll swing by and see if it's still there.
  2. Found a nice copy of the 5-lp Parker Savoy box set from 1978 and have trouble finding out specific info about it. Every Google search I try brings up a multitude of hits, but other than the odd copy for sale, no relevant info to this specific release. Anyone familiar with it? Thoughts, comments, etc? They price is nice, but money is getting tight and I probably have most of what's here in various forms already. Thanks!
  3. That was my introduction to Idris. Awesome album.
  4. Not to pick on you, but everytime I hear this mentioned, I have to ask why, if this is the case, does the site then solicit and accept donations from it's users? I used to moderate on a site that was connected to a fanzine, fan convention, book and retail store with an active user list similar to, and maybe even larger than, Hoffman's and not only did the guy running it pay for it out of pocket but we had fewer moderators and the only instances where posts were deleted dealt with piracy and only when threads became flame wars did we lock them. So I just don't buy that excuse because I know from personal expirence it doesn't have to be like it is. Now I've gone off topic on this thread. Apologies.
  5. Hey, I got the answer I needed. Thanks guys. Feel free to take this thread wherever you wish. And the bottom line is, this is some wonderful music which should be part of your collection in whatever form you prefer. I'm perfectly happy with the '97, especially for what I paid. I was just more concerned about major differences such as extra tracks and drastically improved sound, though in my so far casual listening of my set, it sounds fine to me.
  6. It's CEDAR, IIRC. Too bad those French LPs aren't likely to show up at Disc Replay any time soon.
  7. Ok, I think I have this right that the Complete RCA set for Armstrong came out in 1997 and then again in 2001. Other than packaging, is there any difference? I was lucky enough to get the '97 recently for a steal ($8) and just curious if I'm missing anything on the newer set.
  8. Half? I consider a quarter of that for mine.
  9. What box set was the '49 Paris on? I love that set and I'd love to have it in better sound, as much as possible anyway. Those transcription discs sound beat.
  10. April In Paris. Also, not quite the direction you're going, but we saw "This Is It" the other night and the guitar solo in Beat It has become part of the song.
  11. Columbia Small Group Swing Sessions, Braff sessions. Niiiiiice.
  12. Still waiting for that last Trane box. Grrrrr...
  13. I've been collecting records since I was 5. It's been almost 30 years now. Ironically, just about the time I started hearing "vinyl is back," I was starting to lose interest in collecting music in any form. For me, it was a combination of two things First off, I had a radio show for three years where every week I'd have, on average, an entire mail tub full of CDs to try to process by the next week. Some of it was great, some terrible, but I never had time to enjoy any of it, let alone get anything for my own pleasure. The second factor was having to move my collection. Packing stuff up, I had to come to terms with the amount of stuff I was hanging on to that I'd never listened to or never would again and it just didn't make any sense to keep it. I ditched maybe 40% of my records, probably 60%+ of my CDs and still have more stuff than any normal person should. I still buy stuff from time to time, more out of habit than anything else. At least I'm back to being able to listen to stuff again. Doing the radio show, I just got so burnt out. I'm still pretty reluctant to add anything to my collection. Not saying I haven't, but it's got to be pretty exceptional stuff.
  14. Yeah, that's me too. I'd add to that eMusic may still be a bargain vs. iTunes/Amazon on some or most things, but the combination of new pricing and album only tracks means I have to do more homework rather than just hitting download. That combination means there are going to be many times when buying elsewhere, or even getting a used copy of the actual CD is going to be cheaper.
  15. Found the cover for this at a junk shop, but never did find the record. LOL
  16. I'm looking forward to snagging Bud Powell's Portrait of Thelonious before I cash out.
  17. RE: Why I "wasted" my time on eMusic. Up until July 1, eMusic was a hell of a bargain. Not only that, but they had a great selection for the kind of things I was interested in. Also, they seemed to be the kind of company who had a lot going for them in creating loyalty (such as grandfathering in the lower rates for those of us who had them last time they went up.) I even knew the name of eMusic's CEO (David Pakman) because he seemed to be a bit more personally connected to the site's users. When Pakman left, I had a hunch he was seeing some writing on the wall the rest of us weren't privy to yet and, sure enough, that's what seems to be happening. It's been fascinating watching how a company managed to piss off such a rabidly loyal user base in such a short period of time. eMusic had the kind of brand loyalty companies kill for and, I think it's pretty fair to say, they all but decimated it not just for enacting some radical changes, but by rolling them out very haphazardly and wrapping them in corporate speak and plain and simple bullshit and misleading statements that we longtime eMusic users weren't used to seeing from the company. Anyway, I've wasted enough brainpower trying to figure this all out. I'm not mad at 'em. They owed me nothing and that's exactly what I got. I'm fascinated by how this all happened, but not interested enough to stick around to see how it pans out. Hope it equalls more money for the indie labels and artists I joined eMusic for in the first place, but I doubt it's going to.
  18. I'm in until late October, but I have a hunch I'm leaving after then. The way this was changed over doesn't bode well for communication in the future and the combination of increased rates and album only pricing makes doing a subscription like eMusic's much less easy to take.
  19. Stay away, unless you enjoy frustration. These sets from this company are random tracks with no information (and some tracks duplicated) just scattered across 10 discs with no rhyme or reason. You get what you pay for... OTOH, Document had an earlier set called Portrait which was 10 discs laid our chronologically with (mostly) correct discographical info and ok sound (a little processed, but for cheap and easy, it'll do.) I got mine for $20 at Half Price Books. That one was worth it.
  20. Looks like Condord/Fantasy has switched over to album only pricing. I just knew I should have downloaded stuff yesterday.
