it was at this shlock-hole of a jazz club, called Tulas. The show started at 830, i got there 3 quarters through, in time for the last set around 1130, and they still wanted like a 20 dollar cover- i told them to fuck themselves, so i sat at the bar for free. After the show i was gonna give my hard earned money directly to Hadley, but he was telling me that i could buy one of his new cds which is gonna be released soon. so heads up on that you guys!! i was really nervous but i asked him what his 1st record date was, and he was all: oh it was such a long time ago....but i was trying to ask him about what albums hes on, pre Gerald wilson? orch (DO ANY OF U GUYS a KNOW?) anyways he was all: I replaced Teddy Edwards in the GW orch, and was on a lot of the latin stuff, like Viva Tirado...but i was under the impression him and Teddy Edwards recorded like a sax duet together, but he didnt mention that.....anyways they played Up jumped spring, a few ballads, it was all nice, but then for the last song....h.c. was all: and now we are going to play one of the great tenor saxophone duels, recording by Wardell Gray, and Dexter Gordeon: The Chase....and i was all *****HELL YEAH******** IT WAS SO GOOD IT WAS SO GOOD IT WAS SO GOOD IT WAS SO GOOD IT WAS SO GOOD IT WAS SO GOOD IT WAS SO GOOD

Hadley Caliman, "Gratitude"

Origin 82499

"...a living legend in full-form."

Earshot Jazz

Returning with his first recording as a leader in over two decades, the legendary tenor saxophonist teams up with vibist Joe Locke, drummer Joe LaBarbera, trumpeter Thomas Marriott and bassist Phil Sparks, re-establishing himself as one of the preeminent post-bop saxophonists alive. Caliman studied with Dexter Gordon, played with Gerald Wilson's Big Band, the Bobby Bryant Band, & Mongo Santamaria in the '50s, and later toured and recorded with Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson and Santana throughout the US and Europe through the '70s.

If I recall chewy, there will be a cd relaese performance with all of the musicians on the record, in March

Bobby Bryant - Ain't Doing too B-A-D, Bad from 1967 on Cadet.

And I think he's on some Mongo Santamaria albums before that. Don't know the titles though...

Yeah, he's a master musician! I recently heard his quartet as part of The Seattle Jazz Showcase series that John Bishop and Matt Jorgensen pulled together at The Seattle Drum School. He plays at Tula's on a regular basis, by the way, at least once or twice per month.

A heads-up that Hadley Caliman will be having a CD release party for Gratitude at Tula's on Friday, March 21st. The band will include Thomas Marriott and Joe Locke.
