ghost of miles Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 My record-store friends gave me half a dozen issues of Jazz Magazine that they'd picked up for free at a recent archive record sale. The issues date from the late 1970s and are full of pretty good articles, interviews, photos, reviews... the first one I looked at had a picture of Miles returning to the studio circa 1978 (the session at which he played organ only). Bob Blumenthal, Ira Gitler, and Dan Morgenstern are listed among the contributing editors. How long was this magazine's run? Not sure if the IU School of Music library has this one or not. Quote
marcello Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 (edited) Look here for a complete list. I was a subscriber at the time. Nice mag. Edited April 10, 2008 by marcello Quote
JSngry Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 I've got them all except for the final issue, which came out while I was on the road and I never picked up. If anybody has a copy for sale, let me know. I think it's got Sonny Rollins on the cover. But otherwise, at some point, expect some scanned articles here at some point. It was a fine publication. ghost of miles Posted April 10, 2008 Author Report Posted April 10, 2008 Cool! Thanks, Marcello. Yeah, I started flipping through the six issues my friend gave me while I was standing in the store, and I came across four articles pertaining to Night Lights shows that I'm working on right now. It was quite a literary gold-mine...and when I sat down to read one here at home for a specific interview, I pretty much ended up reading every single item in the magazine. Quote

The issue with that photograph of Miles in the studio in 1978 also has an article about Red Garland's return to the jazz scene. The "quality ratio" of all the issues I got seems really high. Quote
jazztrain Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 I might still have a few in the basement, but I'm not sure if they went with me during the last move. I remember that the magazine died shortly after I renewed my subscription. Jim has a good memory: Quote
Tom in RI Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Was Peter Keepnews the editor/publisher? I remember sending in the dough to subscribe and they went out of business before I got a single issue, my timing was not good. Quote
jazztrain Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 Tom: Nice to have company! Now that I think back, I believe that they sent out a note saying that the magazine was temporarily suspending operation but planned to resume. Still waiting for that next issue... Chuck Nessa Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 (edited) Just checked and seem to have 7 issues. The issue with Rollins on the cover includes a nice session photo (spread across 2 pages) from the "Contemporary Leaders" date. Edited April 12, 2008 by Chuck Nessa Quote
