DukeCity Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 Why is this in the tradition of the Funny Rat thread? I have no idea. But I do know the Shaggs. Around 1985 I stumbled across a copy of "Philosphy of the World" in a Goodwill store for twenty-five cents. I bought it as a gag gift, based solely on the cover photo. I had no idea what wonders were contained within. The recipient of the gift didn't appreciate any of it and promptly returned it to me. That record became an entertaining staple at parties, even though none of us could ever make it through the whole album in one sitting. Early 1990's there was a CD produced with POTW and some other stuff. I never actually saw a follow-up record. The CD liners included some quotes from Zappa and others. My favorite (from Carly Simon, I think) was, "They bring my mind to a complete halt." Quote
7/4 Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 My favorite (from Carly Simon, I think) was, "They bring my mind to a complete halt." Hey, talk 'bout obscure...she was on Good Morning America today. Quote
Alexander Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 "The Shaggs even showed up in a scholarly paper by Guy Capuzzo, a music theory professor at Penn State, written when he was a graduate student. He says he was drawn to the Shaggs because they remind him of what musicians sound like when they first start out. `It's kind of like a balloon that's just about to burst. There's this enormous tension. ... Two of them will be playing at one tempo, the other one is playing at another tempo. You're waiting for the whole thing to fall apart, but it doesn't,'' he said. `You start to think they're just going to train-wreck, but somehow they get it back together.'" from an essay on Shaggs.com. I know the music theory professor mentioned in that article. Very strange guy (no pun intended). I would sometimes see him at my friend Adam's apartment when I lived in Rochester. He once stripped all of his clothes off (in the presence of my wife and Adam's girlfriend) and ran around the apartment screaming at the top of his lungs. He also REALLY loved my wife's chicken encheladas... Quote
