does anyone have any recommendations for walton's OJC dates? my father had a compilation disc which had songs from a few of these albums and i really liked some of what i heard. then i see the penguin guide liked "soul cycle" which i haven't heard, but from looking at does not look like the kind of album the penguin guys would like. so that interested me. but i was impressed with the songs i heard and was wondering which disc is the one to get. obviously if "spectrum" had a strata-east vibe that would interest me a lot, but apparently that is not true. too bad.

That must be 'Cedar Walton Plays Cedar Walton', which was put out on OJC and is one of my favorite albums ever, and not only just by Cedar. It has some of the best tracks from 'Cedar!', 'Spectrum' and 'The Electric Boogaloo Song' and the sessions are graced with wonderful work by Billy Higgins and fine trumpet from Kenny Dorham and Blue Mitchell. As a compilation it works a treat, a great listen from end to end .... an uplifting experience.

'Soul Cycle' is one that gets mixed reviews (Penguin Guide likes it, AMG hates it) but I would tend to side with the Penguin Guide. It's more commercial but again it's an extremely amiable album and although Cedar's on an inferior electric piano throughout, it's well worth giving a spin. The Penguin Guide is correct in remarking on the very happy, agreeable groove of this disk.

yes i remember the song in particular off of the compilation which really knocked me out had some nice billy higgins and i guess that was dorham blowing a nice trumpet. i think the song was "short stuff". it really was an enjoyable listen. i will have to pick up some of the individual albums soon. sorry this thread has gone off course, undergroundagent!
