Lazaro Vega Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Do you know Dave Burns's composition "Rapid Shave"? Where did that come from? James Carter with trumpeter Dwight Adams, pianist D.D. Jackson, bassist James Genus and drummer Victor Lewis eat it up. As they do Marmarosa's "Dodo's Bounce." James's bass clarinet feature is "Bro. Dolphy" building through lyrical steps toward a power chord. He gives a nod to Django again with "Pour Que Ma Vie Demeure." Have aired this new recording twice on JFBL. Guitarist Rodney Jones and perc. added on some tracks. www.emarcy.com www.jamescarterlive.com Quote
ghost of miles Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 (edited) Yeah, we got this in yesterday and I heard it for the first time last night--good outing from JC. I only know "Rapid Shave" from a Shirley Scott album (QUEEN OF THE ORGAN); I used her version in a Night Lights show a couple years back. Edited May 22, 2008 by ghost of miles Quote
JSngry Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Pretty sure that the Scott version of "Rapid Shave" is the original. Grassella Oliphant did a version a few years later. Great tune, kindred in spirit to Hank's "Breakthrough" in how they descend down from the V chord. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 To answer the original question, Dodos don't bounce - they splatter. Don't know about James Carter but he'd be hard to throw. Quote
