RDK Posted May 29, 2008 Report Posted May 29, 2008 Weird. Sometimes it looks like she's spinning clockwise; other times counter-clockwise. Quote

JSngry Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 THEM BRADFORD PEAR TREES MAY BE ALL SEXED UP AND STUFF, BUT THEY AIN'T ABOUT SHIT WHEN IT COMES TO BEING A DURABLE LONG-LASTING STORM-RESISTANT TREE. KEEP AWAY FROM BRADFORD PEAR TREES, AND HAVE REAL SEX INSTEAD! Quote
RDK Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 And that message, folks, was indeed brought to you through the courtesy of love. Quote
JSngry Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 That message was brought to you by a guy who's lost two Bradford pear trees in the last year for no other reason than they just ain't strong, durable trees. Both instances involved the trees' crotches (actual terminology, btw) but that seemed highly inappropriate for this particular thread. Some other time, perhaps. Bradford pears - grow fast (you get shade in, like, 30 minutes or less...), look great (the white blooms are gorgeous), last about 10 years or so and then give it up w/o too much resistance to the elements, and then not only do you lose a tree, but you got a pain-in-the-ass (and expensive, if you gotta hire somebody, more than the cost of a new tree) cleanup. This last bigass storm we had, where the streets went from being paved in concrete to being paved by trees, damn near all of them was Bradford pears. Quote
BruceH Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 If I were from the town of Bradford I'd be feeling very put-upon by now. Quote

We just planted live oaks instead. Much better choice to begin with. Anything that grows as slowly as a live oak has my respect. We have one in the back, probably not seventy years old. I don't know. We have some very old live oaks in this area. Many of them were destroyed during the Civil War, but you can't imagine the breadth of the trunk until you are standing at it. Such amazing trees. And the old ones along the coast are so gnarly. I'm always amazed. I have some great photos. I can post them some time. Quote
