Free For All Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 I just heard from Bobby Watson (I'm in KC this week) that Slide apparently has suffered either a heart attack or stroke. I haven't heard any details about his condition, and if anyone hears anything, please share it here. I hope he can be with us awhile longer- I just played with him in April and he seemed to be in great shape and spirit. Let's keep him in our thoughts. This week is turning out to be a rough one. marcello Posted June 25, 2008 Report Posted June 25, 2008 I saw him in concert a week ago in Rochester. He was fine but only played one song in a JATP type jam at the Eastman ( "Lament"). I hope all is well. Quote
John Tapscott Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 I hope so too. I have just been digging Slide on the recently released "Whit Williams Now's The Time Big Band" featuring Jimmy Heath and Slide Hampton (Mama) recorded in 2004. It includes 2 Slide comps and one Slide arrangement (and goodies by Heath, as well). Slide has several solos on the CD and is in excellent form. In fact, the whole CD is a gas; one of my favorites so far in 2008. Get well, Slide! Quote
rachel Posted June 26, 2008 Report Posted June 26, 2008 I found this on the web We've lost the Sisters, and I hate to think of Slide in less than perfect health. I know aging is a part of life, but still... Quote
sheldonm Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 Here are a couple shots of Slide that I made at a tribute to his sister Aletra, who had just passed away. This was earllier this year. Quote
sheldonm Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 (edited) ...and one from left to right....his nephew Pharez Whitted, Slide, Slide's brother Maceo and local trumpet great Clifford Ratliff. m~ Edited June 27, 2008 by sheldonm Quote
sidewinder Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 Here's wishing Slide well. Brilliant trombonist and great arranger/leader. One of the best. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 Agreed. All the best to Slide, though I know not even someone of his stature can beat the inevitable. Quote
JohnS Posted June 28, 2008 Report Posted June 28, 2008 Here's wishing Slide well. Brilliant trombonist and great arranger/leader. One of the best. My view too. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 28, 2008 Report Posted June 28, 2008 (edited) Last time I saw him was at the North Sea Fest a few years ago, directing the Dizzy Gillespie Tribute Big Band there. Presented the band in a most professional manner and even had his 'bone on the stage in its stand - although I don't think he played it in the end. Was hoping he'd get a solo or two in. Hardbopjazz Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 I saw Slide on Sunday June 29th at the Blue Note in NY. He looked well. The band played for almost 90 minutes a set. Quote
