You are right, and this session has been mentioned here & there a few times before. It's really good stuff, especially Track 3 which is Unity, Pure Newark Style.

This is somewhere between "pretty good" and "pretty darn good" - if you know what I mean. (I've got the original LP.)

Especially the side-long version of "Power to the People" (a tune NOT on the official Lighthouse recordings)...

date: 1970/09 (circa); location: unknown location

Henderson, Joe - ts; Shaw, Woody - tp; Cables, George - el p; McClure, Ron - b, el b; White, Lenny - dr.

1. Invitation (Kaper/Webster)

2. Punjab (Henderson)

3. Power to the People (Henderson)

Henderson, Joe and Shaw, Woody -- Jazz Patterns

(yeah, this is a boot, or nearly so.)

I think you'd like Azar Lawrence's first Prestige side from '74 . Woody's only on two tracks , and only solos on the the title cut , Bridge into the New Age , but the whole album's got that Tribe/Strata-East spiritual vibe . Too bad Azar's two later Prestige albums ( much like Patrice Rushen's ) went in a musically less-interesting , commercial direction .

Oh you're talking about sideman dates too?

I'm not too sure but what about Art Blakey's Anthenagin:

It looks like not all of the tracks have made it to cd, for some reason. Nice date!

all but one tracks have made it to cd though, if i didn't overlook anything on the two art blakey ojcs child's dance and mission eternal... are these albums worth getting?

another shaw obscure (?) item that's out on cd which i have been wondering about is that 1977 mingus session with

Woody Shaw, Jack Walrath (tp) Peter Matt (frh) Gerry Mulligan (ss, bars) Ricky Ford (ts) Paul Jeffrey (ts, arr) Lionel Hampton (vib) Bob Neloms (p) Charles Mingus (b) Dannie Richmond (d)

is that worth checking out?

those two albums master of art / night music aren't out on cd either... right?

The Mingus with Woody Shaw is disappointing if your expectations are that it will be a great Mingus record (my reaction when it came out). At this point, Mingus' illness was affecting his playing. If you approach it, however, from the perspective that it is a loose jam session using various Mingus compositions, featuring solos by Woody Shaw, Gerry Mulligan and Lionel Hampton on those themes, after the passage of time, I now find it to be an enjoyable album. It's nice to hear these guys soloing on these compositions. I don't think it's that hard to obtain, I believe it has been issued on CD more than once.

To my mind the best albums not yet issued on CD are the two he made for Elektra Musician in 1982. I seem to recall this was discussed on a different thread some time ago but for the life of me I can't understand why these two beauties have never seen the light of day. They would make a terrific 'doubler'.

For information the recordings are:

Night Music

Orange Crescent

To Kill A Brick

Apex

All The Things You Are

Master Of The Art

400 Years Ago Tomorrow

Diane

Mysterioso

Sweet Love Of Mine

Interview with Woody Shaw

Woody Shaw - trumpet, flugelhorn

Steve Turre - trombone

Bobby Hutcherson - vibes

Mulgrew Miller - piano

Stafford James - bass

Tony Reedus - drums

Recorded: February 25, 1982 Live at 'The Jazz Forum', New York City

Wounded Bird just reissued the two Griffith Park Collection albums (one was a double) that were originally issued by Elektra Musician, I believe. Maybe a quick email to them would do the trick?

Edit: I sent them an email. Here is their reply -

Great news! Thanks for the info, I'll keep my eyes open for it/them!

I've just checked the Wounded Bird site and see that the two very good Elektra Musician albums by Chico Freeman are also due out next month.

Chico Freeman/Tradition In Transition ....CD $11.99

Chico Freeman/Tangents ....CD $11.99

Chico Freeman is a jazz tenor saxophone player who has made many fine albums over the years. Two of those were on the Elektra/Musician label. ' Tradition In Transition' from 1982, features Jack DeJohnette. 'Tangents' from 1984, features Bobby McFerrin. Both make their CD debut here.

This has made my day!

Well done Wounded Bird!

I have that on LP and to be frank, it is a little sloppy, but enjoyable. It was made for Lionel Hampton's label Who's Who.

The sound was a little thin too.

This has been out on cd. . . I think at least once legitimately.
