I have on hold the Columbia/Legacy edition of 'An Evening with Herbie Hancock & Chick Corea. It seems to be OOP as many Legacy editions now are, but because of the duff review in the Penguin guide I'm hesitant to pick this one up. I can get it for $8 but I just can't make up my mind. suggestions?

Haven't heard it in 15+ years, and must have traded it back then too. Remember it being more 'interesting' than something I really dug a whole lot.

Wasn't there a similar album with Chick and Herbie (duo piano), but under Chick's name?? (Or with Chick's name listed first).

In any case, I half remember some companion album to this one.

There were two 2-record sets, both from the same tour, one on Columbia (Herbie's label) and one on Polydor (Chick's label):

I didn't like either of them, but then, I never liked either of their styles - too busy, not melodic enough. As a contrast, I loved the Hank Jones/Tommy Flanagan dual-piano album that came out around the same time.

I'd get it for $8.00, but not too much more. A lot of "show" in the playing, but enough "tell" not to overlook it entirely.

Then again, if you really need that $8.00 right now...

Definitely "auxillary" recordings in both men's oeuvre, not in any way essential. I do, however, remember the Polydor side as being more engaging on all fronts than the Columbia.
