AndrewHill Posted August 30, 2008 Report Posted August 30, 2008 I have on hold the Columbia/Legacy edition of 'An Evening with Herbie Hancock & Chick Corea. It seems to be OOP as many Legacy editions now are, but because of the duff review in the Penguin guide I'm hesitant to pick this one up. I can get it for $8 but I just can't make up my mind. suggestions? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted August 30, 2008 Report Posted August 30, 2008 Haven't heard it in 15+ years, and must have traded it back then too. Remember it being more 'interesting' than something I really dug a whole lot. Wasn't there a similar album with Chick and Herbie (duo piano), but under Chick's name?? (Or with Chick's name listed first). In any case, I half remember some companion album to this one. Quote

(Or with Chick's name listed first). In any case, I half remember some companion album to this one. There were two 2-record sets, both from the same tour, one on Columbia (Herbie's label) and one on Polydor (Chick's label): Columbia Polydor I didn't like either of them, but then, I never liked either of their styles - too busy, not melodic enough. As a contrast, I loved the Hank Jones/Tommy Flanagan dual-piano album that came out around the same time. Quote
JSngry Posted August 30, 2008 Report Posted August 30, 2008 I'd get it for $8.00, but not too much more. A lot of "show" in the playing, but enough "tell" not to overlook it entirely. Then again, if you really need that $8.00 right now... Definitely "auxillary" recordings in both men's oeuvre, not in any way essential. I do, however, remember the Polydor side as being more engaging on all fronts than the Columbia. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted August 30, 2008 Report Posted August 30, 2008 (edited) Didn't care for it. Had a copy and disposed of it long ago. Edited August 30, 2008 by Peter Friedman Quote
AndrewHill Posted August 30, 2008 Author Report Posted August 30, 2008 Thanks everyone for the reviews. Half Price is having a 20% off everything sale, so I went ahead and bought it (got it for $7!) and will give it a spin soon. Quote
