Big Al
I see that BMG has this one now. I've never heard it, but I assume it was part of the Basie Roulette Mosaic. Any thoughts on this one?
ghost of miles
I've heard that the re-mastering on it is excellent. (Malcolm Addey?) I just re-joined BMG (they always invite you back a week or two after you cancel your membership) and am going to nab this one in the second part of the buy-1-get-12 deal. Never heard the record, but it's supposedly prime late-50s Count.
Free For All
Some great Thad charts, the timeless Blues in Hoss' Flat- IMHO, this is a good one. Definitely worth picking up. I thought the sound was kind of funny on the reissue (maybe it was like this on the original, I don't know)- when the band shouts, it seems to get softer, like some some of 'limiter' is in place or something. I'm sure someone can explain this in technical terms better than I can. It just sounds kind of artificial to my ears. But I do love the music, especially Thad's charts! Tjazz
I'm gonna get this thru BMG too. BMG also has Bobby Hutcherson MONTARA available.
DrJ
Having long had this on vinyl, the CD reissue SMOKES! No complaints here - Malcom Addey is a prince as far as I'm concerned. This also happens to be one of my favorite latter day Basie albums. I can't fully explain why - it's rather "constricted" in some ways in terms of solo space, but there's a feeling that every note counts, and the charts are ultra tight and hip. I love this one. Brad
I, too, like this one. It seems that EMI is starting to slowly reissue what was on the Mosaic Basie Roulette studio. Here's a link to a discussion of the Count Basie reissue as well as some others from earlier this year.
