Van Basten II Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 (edited) Here's the track list. http://www.alapage.c...es/pdf/nova.pdf A while back I mentionned buying this set and MG showing an interest for it asking me to report back, unfortunately I completely forgot about it. however, I found a deal to get the older set plus a new set done this year, just prior to Christmas, how convenient ! Of course if I'm buying the other sets of this series it is because I enjoyed the one showcased but you have to be careful and know a few things before hand. The great positive is the music by itself, especially if you have eclectic tastes like mine and don't mind listening to different styles in the same period of time, you'll listen to people you never bother buying a whole cds of them but that you might enjoy Yma Sumac comes to mind, you'll hear stuff you didn't remember and (at least in my case ) hear stuff you never heard before. At the same time, the set is still what it is a bunch miscellaneous pieces bunched together and in a MP3 world, you have to wonder whether it still is relevant. The other negatives about the set is like MG mentionned when we discussed the set back then, is that they took creative liberties about the years the songs have been made. Each Cd is suppposed to represent a year in a few cases the selection gets away from that without any explanations. Also there is no putting into context the songs chosen nor they are liner notes about the artists themselves, so all you are ending up is a great bunch of soing you might enjoy, depending on your tastes. I was lucky besides the few jazz that weren't that original, I had very little of the rest of this collection but this not may be your case, my take on it is check out the song selection and decide whether it is worth it. It sure makes for an original jukebox. Edited January 10, 2011 by Van Basten II Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 I didn't notice before, but are there only a dozen or so tracks on each CD? About forty minutes a side seems a bit cheapskate. (Or am I forgetting that there are some long ones on them?) MG Quote
Van Basten II Posted November 23, 2008 Author Report Posted November 23, 2008 They are a few long pieces, so in the time department, can't really say that we're getting screwed up, made a small check on a few cds, they are mostly around the 50 minutes mark. Quote

JSngry Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 Follow the link http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...mp;#entry731475 Thanks! The boxsets are celebrating an ecclectic French radio station that specializes in playing a curious mix of African, electronic, jazz and other non-mainstream music called Nova that celebrated their 25th anniversary . The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 Coo, it's expensive, isnt it? Over a hundred quid from Amazon.fr. MG Quote
Van Basten II Posted November 23, 2008 Author Report Posted November 23, 2008 (edited) The volume 2 is still expensive, but the newly re-edited volume 1 sells for less than 60 euros, which is good thing because Ebay sellers would try to sell that sucker for more than 200 Euros. Volume 3 seems on the cheaper side in terms of content but they still have plenty of stuff that i'll discover. Finally found a tracklist for number 3 http://www.alapage.com/files/pdf/Coffret_Nova_3.pdf They have seem to abandon any concept whatsoever. By the way might as well put the track listing of number 1 http://www.discogs.com/release/1017133 Those looking for number 2 may look at my first post. Edited November 23, 2008 by Van Basten II Quote

Van Basten II Posted November 23, 2008 Author Report Posted November 23, 2008 On Amazon France, they (volume 1 and 3) list it at 59.80 Quote
Christiern Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 It looks like the worst kind of random mish-mash. Why would anyone want this box? What is the target market? Quote
Van Basten II Posted November 23, 2008 Author Report Posted November 23, 2008 Well, apparently i am Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 This set is my record collection. I'm delighted to see that a French radio station has inherited my good taste. Quote

Van Basten II Posted November 25, 2008 Author Report Posted November 25, 2008 Ended up having volume 1 and 3 for 112.80 shipping included Quote
Van Basten II Posted February 15, 2009 Author Report Posted February 15, 2009 Not that thrilled by volume 1, too many songs including world beat stuff infected by the awful synth and electronic drums, the mix of songs contained a little too much hip hop and electronic stuff that i care little about. Volume 3, which has gone away from making cds representing each year has shown a better mix of oldies with more recent stuff, of course it is still a pre-requisite that you enjoy listening stuff all over the map to go on the same hour from Funkadelic's Maggot Brain to Dario Moreno and some JJ Cale can be too much for some Quote
Van Basten II Posted January 10, 2011 Author Report Posted January 10, 2011 (edited) Bought the most recent one called 24 hours in the life of Nova, each CD represents an hour and music you hear at that time if I had an iPod that stuff would be on it. Here's the track listing. For whatever reason the track list mentionned at Amazon France is not correct. Anyway any set that includes Duke Ellington, LCD soundsystem, A tribe called Quest, Cheikh Lo and Nina Simone is doing all right by my standards http://www.discogs.c...release/2552526 On the less eclectic side of things as it focuses more on dancing music although it still covers a wide range from House, Hip hop , trip-hop etc Nova offers in the same box set his first 10 Nova Tunes cds. http://www.amazon.fr...all_full#disc_1 Edited January 10, 2011 by Van Basten II Quote
