Just picked up a cut out ($5.99, no sales tax in OR) copy of this unissued at the time Contemporary (not any more!) date. A little raggedy in spots, but if you like mid-sized bands this is fine, not quite Passing Ships or Slice of the Top or Birth of the New Cool fine, but fine enuff. Why is it that there's never a mid-sized band catagory in jazz polls? It's a totally different beast than a sm combo or fullblown BIG band. And Teddy is/was ready!

Agree. This is probably my favorite Teddy. And he had nice memories of it when I spoke with hime shortly before his passing.

With the exception of Jimmy Woods and Larance Marable, the sidemen are not well-known: Nathaniel Meeks, Lester Robertson, Modesto Brisenio, Danny Horton, Roger Alderson. They all sound fine here, but mainly it's a supporting role.

was a bit disappointed that they (obviously on purpose) got together these relatively obscure guys and then didn't feature them more (lester robertson of course recorded a lot with tapscott later on... afaik nathaniel meeks has a chapter in that french "san quentin jazz band" book which i haven't tried to read so far, hoping for a translation..., brisenio is featured (more?) on this recent fresh sound release "chamber jazz sextet with kenneth patchen" which looks pretty interesting http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/record.php?record_id=5118 )
