BERIGAN Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 (edited) Came across his name by searching for King and I cds! Has he been mentioned on the board before???? bio from Allmusic.com. Wilbur Harden is a mystery man in jazz history, for he appeared on some important recording sessions (most notably with John Coltrane) and then, after 1960, pretty well disappeared. He played R&B with Roy Brown (1950) and Ivory Joe Hunter, and then served in the Navy. Harden emerged in 1957, recording with Yusef Lateef, and led four record dates for Savoy in 1958; three were with Coltrane (who became the leader on reissues), and one in a quartet with Tommy Flanagan. In 1960, Wilbur Harden (who was one of the first trumpeters to regularly double on flügelhorn) recorded one title with Curtis Fuller, but then ill health forced him to retire at the age of 35. mikeweil Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 His recordings with Coltrane were chosen as Album of the Week some time ago. Click here, there's some info along the discussion. Quote
Daniel A Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Has he been mentioned on the board before???? Use the search function! I'm almost certain he's mentioned here somewhere, as well as on the previous board. I think someone, possibly Bertrand or Mike Fitzgerald, said he died during the last 10-15 years or so. Quote
Jim R Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 (edited) I've mentioned him here and on other boards, often in direct reference to that KING & I quartet album on Savoy with Tommy Flanagan. It's a treasure, IMO. He was also part of Coltrane's BAHIA and STARDUST albums, on Prestige. Too bad he didn't record more... Edited November 5, 2003 by Jim R Quote
Big Wheel Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Are there any Harden discographies online? I'm considering putting on a radio program of his music and that of other hard bop trumpeters of the period, and am trying to get a feel for how much is out there... Quote
Jim R Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 I don't know of a formal discography online. AMG confuses things a bit with reissues and compilations. Here's a selected list from my database: John Coltrane / Wilbur Harden 1958-03-13 "Mainstream 1958" (Savoy 12127) Wilbur Harden 1958-05-13;06-24 "Tanganyika Strut" (Savoy 12136) Wilbur Harden 1958-06-24 "Jazz Way Out" (Savoy 12131) John Coltrane 1958-07-11 "Bahia" (Prestige 7353) (ojc 415) John Coltrane 1958-07-11;12-26 "Stardust" (Prestige 7268) (ojc 920) Wilbur Harden 1958-09-23 "The King And I" (Savoy 13002) Curtis Fuller 1960-06-06, 07 "Images Of Curtis Fuller" (Savoy 12164) Quote
mikeweil Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 (edited) I'm currently attempting to write a discography of Harden, but due to the enormous number of reissues of the stuff with Coltrane this will take some more time. Besides some early sessions with R&B groups there are his sessions with Yusef Lateef for Prestige and Savoy and one with John Coltrane (complete on the Prestige Stardust Session CD) and his own four dates, all for Savoy, and the one issued track from the abandoned Curtis Fuller Savoy date (on Images). That's all there is ... Edited November 5, 2003 by mikeweil Quote

mikeweil Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 (edited) These AMG guys drive me crazy: so he plays liner notes! and accompaniment! With all likelihood he doesn't solo on the Roy Brown dates. Here's a listing of the first LP issues: New Jazz 8218 Yusef Lateef - Other Sounds New Jazz 8234 Yusef Lateef - Cry! mikeweil Posted November 5, 2003 Report Posted November 5, 2003 Yusef Lateef Yusef Lateef Plays for Lovers (1957) Frank Wess Jazz Is Busting out All over (1957) That particular Lateef is a compilation. The latter was not a Frank Wess session but another compilation featuring several Wess tracks. Quote
