Teasing the Korean Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 So I'm with friends and family last night engaged in two of my favorite activities - listening to vinyl and drinking red wine! We're passing around record covers and talking about the music - Jim is reading the back of a record cover - I think it was "Hip Vibrations" by Cal Tjader but I could be wrong - and he says "Chris Albertson wrote the liner notes." I said "You know him?" He did not. I told him, "He's great, posts on Organissimo all the time. Very knowledgeable fellow, long history in the biz, yada yada yada..." Small world. Quote
Christiern Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 Nice to be remembered. I hope the notes were not too embarrassing. Quote

Free For All Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 It's good to have done enough in your life to merit a yada or two. Quote
WorldB3 Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 (edited) Chris, I am sure you know but your mentioned on page 14 in Joe Boyd's book White Bicycles. He felt your radio show of Jazz and Blues out of Philly in 1960 was a revelation and for the first time he felt that he was not alone in his love of that music. This led to him setting up his first gig by tracking down Lonnie Johnson. We are all lucky to have your here on this forum. Edited March 1, 2009 by WorldB3 Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 well, I've said this before, and it's not just because he sends me cash on occasion, but Chris is one of the major figures in the music business of the last 50 or so years - not just for his Bessie Smith bio, but for the musicians he produced and recorded and helped and promoted - and, as Larry Cohn told me recently, he was not well treated afterwards. To quote Larry (an important guy himself), "sure, there's ---- and ----- and -----, but for my money the guy who deserves the recognition for all that he did and accomplished is Chris Albertson." (I'm leaving out the examples Cohn gave because he was not diminishing these people, only making a comparison) Quote
BruceH Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 It just so happens that I just noticed the liner notes on a vinyl compilation of 40's jazz singers were done by Chris Albertson. And they were quite good. Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 hey I just picked up a Son House reissue - notes by - whatshisname - Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 Fred Nurdley wrote notes for Son House?!! Quote
Victor Christensen Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 Hi Chris Hope you are doing fine, I can still remember you way, way back, over 50 years ago in the good old days at Diplom Radio on Vesterbrogade in Copenhagen, had a lot of fun times there in the back room where Bent Haandstad had that little jazzrecord department. more power to you Vic Quote
Harold_Z Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 (edited) I can't tell you how often I pick up a record and Chris wrote the notes - or produced it. The definitive bio on Bessie PLUS don't forget the New Orleans Living Legends or the Chicago Living Legends for Riverside!?! For those alone Chris deserves far more recognition and appreciation! There is so much more that it would be impossible to write it all here. BTW- catch the Mingus flick "Beneath The Underdog" and check Chris visiting Mingus way back in the day.
