Bright Moments Posted November 7, 2003 Report Posted November 7, 2003 The last few days i've been listening to some herbie mann cd's that you won't find in your amg jazz guide. "London Underground" and "Deep Pocket." Now first let me say that there is a version of Layla on London Underground that is incredible! Deep pocket has a terrific cover of Mustang Sally. Now the dilema. where to file? I have Memphis Underground and a few other Mann cd's all filed (alphabetically) in my "Jazz" section, but these new cd's aren't really jazz--or are they? Taking popular "rock" songs and rearranging them, then playing them without vocals and with instruments not previously used--mixing up the tempos--well, if it is not jazz, what is it? My inclination is to file them in jazz, but . . . one final thought-please, please do NOT post that horrible half-naked mann album cover--ugh B) Quote
Jazzmoose Posted November 7, 2003 Report Posted November 7, 2003 one final thought-please, please do NOT post that horrible half-naked mann album cover--ugh B) I'll second that one! You know, every once in a while I'll reorganize all my CDs so that everything is alphabetical regardless of style...usually drives me crazy after a while for some reason, but it's interesting for a short time. My LPs are almost always like that, but then they're such an odd mix of stuff anyway... Quote
Bright Moments Posted February 5, 2008 Author Report Posted February 5, 2008 i just picked up this little treasure!! excellent cd and a cool cover to boot! Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Glad you bumped this. I like Herbie Mann's Soul Jazz stuff. "Deep pocket" is one of my favourites. Also, "Mississippi gambler". I intend to get more. I don't hear ANY rock tunes on these albums - only Soul tunes (or, in the case of "Satisfaction", imitation Soul tunes). One of the things that really impressed me was that, when Mann died, David Newman described him as the best boss he'd ever had. MG Quote
Bright Moments Posted November 3, 2010 Author Report Posted November 3, 2010 it's fun to find old threads! i can't say enough about this excellent record - easily my favorite by mann: carpe diem! Quote
GA Russell Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 One of the things that really impressed me was that, when Mann died, David Newman described him as the best boss he'd ever had. I didn't know that. It's great to hear that about someone! Quote
jostber Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 Must say that Herbie Mann had some groovy album covers going on. (And I'm not only thinking about the naked Mann cover). Like these: Quote
marcello Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 The Herbie Mann/Bill Evans record has it charms, but I recently played the Village Gate recordings and realized that you really just had to be there, I guess. But then again, those were basically dance records for the middle class hipsters of the day. Here's one of my photos: Here's another ( with Will Lee): Quote
medjuck Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 I've recently been listening to Great Ideas of Western Mann on which he plays only bass clarinet. The title is a double pun because he's backed by a West Coast rhythm section and Jack Sheldon. Quote
PHILLYQ Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 Herbie Mann was born in Brooklyn. I recall Sonny Sharrock saying some nice things about HM. Herbie let Sonny do his thing when Sonny worked for HM, and was most appreciative of the freedom he had. Sharrock is on 'Live at the Whisky a Go Go', with Miroslav Vitous. Quote
