Claude Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 Yes, that was Jimbo. US Open semi-final in 1991 at age 39. In the quarter final, he won against Aaron Krickstein in a 4 hours 41 minute match. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Connors Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 I think the person to wonder about is Borg, as he quit while still very much in his prime with 11 Slams to his credit. Surely he could have won two or three more French Opens and would have had more than a fighter's chance at Wimbledon but he walked away because he didn't think he could beat McEnroe anymore. If he hadn't, I think Pete and now Roger would have been chasing Borg instead. As for the level of play in the last set, I don't think it was nearly to the level of Federer-Nadal, there were too many easy service games. But the tension was incredible. Quote

Swinging Swede Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 how can you play over 4 hours of tennis against Federer, have your serve broken just once and still lose. Has that ever happened before??? Söderling actually only had his serve broken once against Federer in this very tournament and yet lost in three straight sets, 4-6, 6-7, 6-7. One of his best matches ever. That said, Söderling broke none of Federer's serves, whereas Roddick broke them twice. Roddick actually won three more games than Federer. What he must grieve at the most must however be that he had 6-2 in the tiebreak in the second set and yet lost it. 2-0 in sets there and he would have won. He came very close to it anyway. The way the match looked, I thought he deserved to win. Quote
AndrewHill Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 Are you confusing Conners with McEnroe? When Conners had that US Open run when he was almost 40YO IMO Oh yeah, right. I meant Jimmy. Quote
