A great fighter. The sight of Arguello staring at the referee as he counted him out during the second Aaron Pryor fight is one I'll never forget. It was so obvious that he simply knew he couldn't beat Pryor and had the brains to give up while he still had some.

Hearing of Arguello made me look up Pryor on Wikipedia - good to learn that he got past his drug problems and is now an ordained deacon. Back in the 90s if you had to wager, you'd bet that Pryor would have died before Arguello.

Alexis Arguello, the "exlposive thin man" was one of my boxing heros as a young man. That first fight with Pryor was a war, and arguably could have been won by Alexis if convicted-cheater Panama Lewis hadn't given Pryor a swig from a suspicious bottle mix between one of the later rounds.

The second fight was all Aaron Pryor, also one of the greatest fighters of his era. Alexis had moved up four times in weight and simply couldn't match the firepower of the bigger man. But he landed his shots too. One of his patented right hands had Pryors head gyrating. I believe those fights did much to confirm the greatness of Pryor as they did Arguello.

Alexis was unstoppable at junior lightweight and lightweight.

Wonder if his death was really a result of suicide.

At the same time, whenever I look at replays of the fight, it seems that Aaron was destined to win either way. He was simply too strong and unorthodox. His special brand of ring chaos was the perfect foil for Arguello's classic style.

Pryor was a beast in the amateurs. He easily defeated Tommy Hearns and had him close to being knocked out. If Pryor was just a few pounds bigger, he would have had some mighty wars with Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns.

Pryor, Arguello, Leonard, Hearns...boy that was the era! All were great fighters.
