I just Googled for an image of "Sonny Rollins 1542" (Blue Note album), and what I saw reminded me of this age-old dilemma. Isn't it about time we made a choice? I mean, it's 200(and frigging)9 (I think... somebody go ahead and correct me if I'm off by a year). Shouldn't this be settled by now? Anyway, your vote counts (for what, I'm not sure), so jump right in.

Choice 1: Vertical

Choice 2: Horizontal

(Disregard the fact that it doesn't show the original catalog # 1542)

I'm going with vertical.

The LP I bought in 1974 is all I've ever known & it's horizontal - and the bottom stipe on it is yellow, not gold.

I'm still suspicious of that "original" cover on the "new" CD of The Blues And The Abstract Truth. Please don't confuse me again.

Besides, it's not that good fo a record, not relative to other work of the time.

You got a Liberty reprint and if you want to go to the mat with me about TBATAT let me know.

My "real Blue Note" copy (not interested in stamper numbers, etc) was vertical and the "yellow" color was darker than any reprints I've seen. Bought the Nelson disc the first day it came to the store and it was the abstract one - Ollie's pic didn't show up for a couple of years.

I've seen copies of the Lexington posted on ebay with the record half in the sleeve that clearly show the album sleeve being "horizontal".

Yeah...horizontal makes more sense to me...maybe vertical was a simple manufacturing error that they couldn't afford to recall? How long was vertical around, anyways?

Is there any other example of the front cover catalog # being not horizontal?

I like the color scheme of the vertical batter, though.

So far, the poll is at 50/50. Surprising, and somewhat fascinating (at least to my dull mind). I really didn't expect this... I figured there was an obvious answer, and I really started this just for fun.

Jim, your comment/question about a vertical catalog # being questionable is causing me to doubt my initial instincts (although it was comforting to have people like Chuck and brownie seeing it my way...). Holy Ghost's observation is interesting also. I never had an original LP, and I can't remember which orientation was used on the reissue copy I had.

Another aspect of this is the photo itself... I never thought it looked right to see Sonny "lying down". Still, I haven't been able to tell if he really was lying down or standing up when Frank (I assume) took the shot.

At any rate, now I'm beginning to understand why that Google search brought up equal numbers of each...
