mjzee
Similar to the threads on Reid Miles and Andy Warhol, it would be great to compile Gil Melle's non-BN album covers. I think he had a really good design sense: Design: Gil Melle Design: Gil Melle Design: Gil Melle Design: Gil Melle
BruceH
I hear Gil Melle was also a world-class chef.
Chuck Nessa
He did a number of 10" covers too.
Joe
When did the Rollins WORKTIME design go from being magenta to light green?
AndrewHill
Same with the "MILES" cover going from blue to green.
Chuck Nessa
AFAIK during the Fantasy era. It should be noted Prestige occasionally changed colors when reprinting covers. This was before the days of process colors and it was cheaper for them to change a color to match a current new release run on the press at the same time. .:.impossible
What do you mean? I was referring to his design style. His shapes and type faces seem "wacky" to me. Maybe they didn't back then, of course. There is plenty of evidence to show that he wasn't the only one using these devices. It has basically become a kitsch style all its own, exaggerated with 'irony' and 'humor' as most everything is when revisited in this 'post-modern' era. 'denotes bullshit terminology.' Chuck Nessa
I thought you be talkin' 'bout the business decision to change ink colors - the message before yours.
mjzee
He did a number of 10" covers too. Found some on Blue Note: (Figures, right?)
BruceH
I believe he also did woodcarving, painting, and scrimshaw.
jazzydaddy
Yes, but more importantly could he "core a apple"? I believe he also did woodcarving, painting, and scrimshaw. Edited August 27, 2009 by jazzydaddy
Chuck Nessa
He invented the apple.
BruceH
Wouldn't it be cool if he invented "Apple"? (BTW, is just it me, or does the Clifford Brown cover remind anyone else of a table cloth? Edited August 28, 2009 by BruceH
jeffcrom
I picked this OJC CD up this week. I've wanted to hear it since reading Max Harrison's discussion of some of the tracks years ago. Haven't heard it yet, but it's a distinctive cover.
