Hardbopjazz Posted September 27, 2009 Report Posted September 27, 2009 I guess no one here one tickets to see her at the Vanguard last night. No, she wasn't doing the Monk songbook. She was preforming jazz standards. . The concert was free, but it seems just people with big names (Bill and Hillary) seem to have been able to get tickets. She does possess a great voice and it would have been a treat to hear her take on jazz standards. web site Quote
Dan Gould Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 I can't stand her singing, her looks or her politics, and now she's defiled the Village Vanguard. Between this monstrosity and the abomination that happened at the 1.5 Billion Dollar Monstrosity in the Bronx, it truly was a lost weekend. Quote
7/4 Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 uh oh...now the thread needs to be moved into polytix. x Quote
GA Russell Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Her appeal has always been a mystery to me. Too nasal most of the time. Quote

Dave James Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 I've never warmed up to Streisand's voice. Too nasal, too Broadway, too over the top, although I confess that the duet she did with Barry Gibb, Guilty, is currently on my iPod. As an actress, I think she was good in The Way We Were and Prince of Tides. I like both movies a lot. With regard to the issue at hand, leave us not act like Babs has never set foot in the Village Vanguard. Way back before she became famous. Here's a quote from Lorrraine Gordon's book Alive At The Village Vanguard: Miles Davis was playing at the Vanguard and one afternoon - this was still the era of Sunday matinees - Max asked Miles if he would accompany this girl singer Max had brought in for a tryout. And Miles said, in his inimitable, charming way, I don't play behind no girl singers. And he didn't. That girl singer was Barbara Streisand. Barbara did sing at the Vanguard. Without Miles. Up over and out. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 Never liked her voice but her choice of material over the decades has been even worse. Nice that she's singing standards, I suppose, but I'll pass. Quote
