I'm sure he's good, but this story kind of ignores the fact that there has been plenty of recording activity, jazz-wise, with accordion over the years. Most obviously, Guy Klusevek (spelling?); I recorded with an accordionist on my first CD (at the Moment of Impact) in the late 1980s (Jay Gitlin, a great musician from Connecticut).

While I am sure you can recite many instances of jazz accordion recordings I think its not quite accurate to say there has been "plenty", it would have to be some small fraction of 1% of all jazz recordings that feature accordion.

If you get a chance check out Sonny Barbato on George Schuller's take on Filles de Kilamanjaro from Schuller's Playscape recording, Round 'Bout Now. You can also look for Youtube entries for Cory Pesaturo.

Coincidentally, I just saw George in Brookline (just outside Boston) a couple of weeks ago as part of the group "Trio This." They have a new release called "That!" (GM Recordings 3050). No accordion.

ummmmm......fondue.............

thinking about this thread, isn't "accordionist from Rhode Island" redundant?

according to my information, that's the only instrument taught in the public schools there.

I'll second the recommendation for the Schuller album, and not just for the accordion. I like this album a lot.

What's up Tom!

I don't get it?

"I don't get it"

well, if the accordion is the only instrument taught in Rhode Island, than to say a young and upcoming musician from Rhode Island plays the accordion is redundant, as the state permits the learning of no other instrument there.
