BERIGAN Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 Man, the stuff you stumble upon, on Youtube!!!! Supposedly from 1950, about 15 years after she retired!!! I am sure at least 2-3 people will find this interesting. Quote
AllenLowe Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 (edited) she is one of my favorites - I was astounded to learn that she lived in NYC until her death in 1985 - and damn, she sounds absolutely great on these - better than in the '30s, IMHO - Edited November 5, 2009 by AllenLowe Quote
AllenLowe Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 I'm gonna bump this one - according to Berigan there's one more of us here - Quote
AllenLowe Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 (edited) guess I was wrong - probably delirious from the swine flu. Edited November 5, 2009 by AllenLowe Quote
Stereojack Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 Another fan here! These later recordings are really eye-opening. Her voice is deeper, mure mature than tha voice we know from her 20's and 30's sides. Thanks for the link! Quote
AllenLowe Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 (edited) well good, that makes three. What I like about these is that she seems a little less mannered than on her early stuff. Edited November 6, 2009 by AllenLowe Quote
jazztrain Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Make it four. I'm in. well good, that makes three. What I like about these is that she seems a little less mannered than on her early stuff. Quote
medjuck Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 I'd barely heard of Annette Henshaw until a couple of weeks ago when a friend gave me a CDRom full of 78s he'd transferred. It included about 25 performances by Henshaw from the '20s and '30s. Listening to Black Bottom right now. Pretty good stuff. Quote
kenny weir Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Have you guys checked out Sita Sings The Blues? Very cool movie - my son and I dug it! - that uses Hanshaw songs. According to wikipedia, though, there were issues with that usage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sita_Sings_the_Blues Quote

AllenLowe Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 there apparently exists a 1970s radio interview that she gave - I have been unable to locate it. Anybody have a source, by any chance? Quote

I even like the Hawaiian stuff few others like. She didn't even like them! Some of the best cds appear to be out of print(Such a shame the Sensation series only put out 3 cds) But, I see some small label cds that have come out in the past year, with tracks I've never heard. Yea, for small miracles! Hopefully, the thousands of Hanshaw fans are still checking out this thread. Something I found on youtube a month ago, there are 2 versions of I Have to Have You. Here is the version I have heard on CD, which sounds over filtered here. I Have to Have You The one I just found out about, anyone ever hear this one before??? I Have to Have You, version 2 She had such an interesting voice to me. She really could change it for each recording(I don't mean the Helen Kane sounding stuff) She could darken it, for the want of a better word. Not the somewhat silly singing with a tear in her eye sound Ruth Etting used...Needless to say, I wish she had desired singing beyond the mid 30s. IIRC, she actually sang on radio after she stopped recording, and was much more popular than you would think at the end of her performing days. BERIGAN Posted November 6, 2009 Author Report Posted November 6, 2009 there apparently exists a 1970s radio interview that she gave - I have been unable to locate it. Anybody have a source, by any chance? Sorry. Man, if you ever find it, let us know! I did buy a cd of an interview of Helvetia Boswell she did in the late 70's(I think) Can't seem to find that online right now. Quote
