ghost of miles Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 I actually really like that album (LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND FRIENDS). Some of the tracks go on a bit too long IMO, but for the most part I think Satchmo sounds at home with those tunes. Quote
Shrdlu Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 You mean Pops and Pharaoh really did record together? Quote
ghost of miles Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 You mean Pops and Pharaoh really did record together? Oh, no, not that I'm aware of--it's Leon Thomas, who sang on the original "Creator," on the Pops record. Quote
Shrdlu Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 Oh, yeah, I remember that album. A Bob Thiele job, wasn't it? Flying Dutchman Records? Richard Davis was also on it. The song, of course, is on a Pharaoh Impulse LP, also with Leon Thomas, but not Pops, or King Oliver either. Quote
brownie Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 Ornette Coleman was among the guests who sang 'We Shall Overcome' on the 'Louis Armstrong and His Friends' album! Quote
jazzbo Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 Miles was there too, I believe. Was RCA, not Flying Dutchman I think. Quote
brownie Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 (edited) Yes, Miles too. If I remember right, there was a photo of the gathering in an issue of Jazz & Pop that came out shortly after the record date! Must have that issue gathering dust somewhere...
