AllenLowe Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 I always loved those cheapie discount labels - years ago there was a pianist who used to visit a friend of mine in New Haven and apparently he had some good-selling records on Crown, in a Nat-Cole vein. Nice guy, African American, could really play, but I cannot think of his name (and he had a cute girlfriend about half his age). Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 26, 2009 Author Report Posted November 26, 2009 oh god um, i dont know who that would of been off the top of my head.........ill look through my many, many crown piles Quote
AllenLowe Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 thanks, Chewy - funny thing is I think I heard his name a few months ago - they would be Nat Cole-type trio albums. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 26, 2009 Author Report Posted November 26, 2009 i had a few hrs to sleep on it Allen Lowe, i dont think i know of it. there is this one album ive passed on i dont know why by a stride pianist Willard McDaniel but thats stride not nat cole and he only had a sole album. um, oh god this is eating at me----but yo this is still one of the biggest discoveries ive had in a while WHAT IS UP WILL BILLBOARD- OMG. IT HAS SO MUCH MUSIC HISTORY INFO. I CAN NEVER GO BACK AND READ EVERY BACK ISSUE EVER-- WHAT, WAS IT BI-WEEKLY? OH GOD Quote
AllenLowe Posted November 27, 2009 Report Posted November 27, 2009 that's definitely not him. I will have to think about it. I also remember that he died of cancer not long after I met him. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 27, 2009 Author Report Posted November 27, 2009 are you sure it was crown? Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 27, 2009 Author Report Posted November 27, 2009 are you sure your friend wasnt Hadda Brooks? Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 27, 2009 Author Report Posted November 27, 2009 what about Crown LP5014 THE FABULOUS JIMMY BEASLEY reissue of Modern LPM1214 Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted November 27, 2009 Report Posted November 27, 2009 Agree with Chewy. I cannot find any male pianist that had a King Cole-type combo and had SEVERAL albums on Crown either. Jimmy Beasley comes to mind but isn't exactly one who emulated King Cole. Quote
AllenLowe Posted November 27, 2009 Report Posted November 27, 2009 thinking about it more - after all these years, it actually might have been something on King, except that I recall being shown a record jacket and I remember that Crown logo. but it has been about 30 years. the mystery deepens. JSngry Posted November 27, 2009 Report Posted November 27, 2009 WHAT IS UP WILL BILLBOARD- OMG. IT HAS SO MUCH MUSIC HISTORY INFO. I CAN NEVER GO BACK AND READ EVERY BACK ISSUE EVER-- WHAT, WAS IT BI-WEEKLY? OH GOD Billboard was/is weekly. If you don't know what it was/is, you should take a little time to do some research. It is to the record business what Variety is to movies & theatre, and yeah, it has a very long history. Quote
