I always loved those cheapie discount labels - years ago there was a pianist who used to visit a friend of mine in New Haven and apparently he had some good-selling records on Crown, in a Nat-Cole vein. Nice guy, African American, could really play, but I cannot think of his name (and he had a cute girlfriend about half his age).

i had a few hrs to sleep on it Allen Lowe, i dont think i know of it. there is this one album ive passed on i dont know why by a stride pianist Willard McDaniel but thats stride not nat cole and he only had a sole album. um, oh god this is eating at me----but yo this is still one of the biggest discoveries ive had in a while

Agree with Chewy. I cannot find any male pianist that had a King Cole-type combo and had SEVERAL albums on Crown either. Jimmy Beasley comes to mind but isn't exactly one who emulated King Cole.

thinking about it more - after all these years, it actually might have been something on King, except that I recall being shown a record jacket and I remember that Crown logo.

Billboard was/is weekly. If you don't know what it was/is, you should take a little time to do some research. It is to the record business what Variety is to movies & theatre, and yeah, it has a very long history.
