Tom 1960 Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 Since I've been off the past week, I've had a good opportunity to listen to XM/Sirius Real Jazz and had the chance to hear Sean Jones. A name I'm not familiar with. Young trumpeter with what appears a fiery style which I really enjoy. I think he might also play on the recent Gerald Wilson release? Anyone here also dig this guy and wish to offer some thoughts? When I heard this guy, it made me pause and take notice. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted December 1, 2009 Author Report Posted December 1, 2009 Gosh, hard to believe no one here has any thoughts on this guy either positive or negative? Ok, as you were.... Quote
Free For All Posted December 1, 2009 Report Posted December 1, 2009 Sorry Tom, I had read this and meant to reply sooner but have been slammed with end-of-the-semester stuff at school. I knew and played with Sean when I was living in the Cleveland area around 2000 or so. At that point he was a great player with much promise of more to come, and also a really nice guy. I've heard his CDs and have to say that there are great and less than great moments. His playing is excellent throughout but the music is a little inconsistent (some of the tunes with synth are not really to my taste, and stylistically out of context (IMO) with the other tunes). That said, I think there is much more great music to come from this talented musician. He's a MF on the trumpet. Both lead and solo chops. Quote
TedR Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 Read an article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer that he will be the new director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. Quote
Free For All Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 Is Jack Schantz stepping down? I think Sean would do a great job. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 Saw him once. Technically assured but nothing special that time. Quote
TedR Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 I don't know. Jack is still listed as a member of the orchestra. Could he be stepping down to concentrate on teaching? Quote
Free For All Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 He might just be burned out on running the show. It's a lot of MF work. He probably just wants to focus on fewer things, like playing, teaching & family. I half expected Paul Ferguson to take over the CJO. Quote

Tom 1960 Posted December 4, 2009 Author Report Posted December 4, 2009 I've been pretty busy the past few days and have been listening to the album "Gemini" on lala.com when time permits. Some of the music I really enjoy. The synth stuff, well mixed feelings on this. As was mentioned by a poster in the Gemini thread, this isn't Blue Note from 40 yrs. ago. It's much more contemporary outing. I'll keep this album in mind and at the same time look up some of his other sessions. Thanks for the commentary, guys. Quote
