Who would have thought. My kid's interested in vinyl. Heretofore, he's been an ipod kind of guy. My friend gave me an old Dual turn table. I bought a Sansui 661 for $50. Looking for speaker suggestions in that price range. Thanks!

Haunt your local Goodwill/other thrift store. Look for Boston Acoustics, JBLs, Infinitys, etc. of the bookshelf variety. You'll never know what you might stumble across -- you might have to refoam the woofers, but it is not expensive nor hard to do.

You have to be of the time. Look for ARs or maybe Bose 901s. My first set of bookshelf speakers were Martins (the guitar company), and I bought my first stereo from Crazy Eddie himself, back when he had one store on Kings Highway in Brooklyn.

Though to really replicate the time, your kid needs a changer (with an arm to steady the LP stack), and maybe a penny taped to the cartridge head. Ah, those were the days!

Thanks guys. This search has brought me back to my high school & college days in 1970s. Blasting Ten Years After in my bedroom on my Sherwood, Dual & JBLs. Now I go to my kid's dorm hall and it's so quiet.

Bless him, Peter. That's great.

Re the quiet dorm, I find boys (i.e. 18 through mid 20s) today to be so quiet and shy, almost emo. Hard to get them out of their shells. I've taken them clubbing and they sneak off in fear, leaving me to stay there and dance for hours.

I think it's quiet because they're all listening to ipods :)
