DURIUM 80 ( 1930 - 2010 )

logo1930.jpg

Eighty years ago, a young firm, Durium, founded by Chicago Stockholders, started to develop a new kind of unbreakable flexible record, which should be sold as a weekly issue containing the last music hits. The first ones should be sold in February 1930 in the New York news stands. In the preceding months test records were made - today one of the first - the oldest one that still exist. A very rare test record !!

The next months the Hit of the week blog will follow all weekly issues at a weekly schedule starting the 13th of February 2010, eighty years after the first one was officially released. Before that time several test, promo and custom records were released, to be spotlighted the next weeks.

Keep swinging

I didn't know about this! I always thought Durium was an Italian label. I remember the hits of Domenico Modugno - "Volare" and something else - came out here on Durium.

It is, but originally it was founded in the US and active there between 1930 and 1932 (1933). It had an European sister company, based in England ( 1932 - 1934 (1935)) and later "local' record companies in Denmark, France and Italy. The Italian Durium firm, labeled as Novita durium and Durium La Voce Dell' Impero was succeeded after the Second World War as ................ guess? .................... your Italian Durium lavbel, which still exists.

Mind that most US and European pre-war Durium records don't have anything to do with jazz. The pre-war Itlian Duriums were used by Mussolini for his facism propaganda .......
