I purchased this, but it won't play in my US DVD player.

I've e-mailed the distributor to see if they'll take it back.

Cost to me was $43 including shipping from Europe.

Open but obviously unplayed.

I'll sell it to someone for $35 (personal check only)shipped 1st class.

US or Canada only.

You need a DVD player that can play PAL format.

Mine doesn't.

I received an e-mail from the distributor.

They won't take it back but say that it is not region coded.

It plays on any American multiplayer system but not on a ntsc player (whatever that means).

Apparently I have a ntsc player.

If you have the player described above it'll work for you.

1st response gets it.

I'm not buying a new DVD player just for this.

It's a Sony DVD/VHS. Model is SLV-D380P.

Tell me where to look & what to do. I'll give it a try.

It's not the region code that's the problem - as the distributor stated, it's a region-free (region 0) disc. jlhoots' DVD player needs to be able to play PAL (European video standard) discs, and I'd bet that it does not. Most of the region-selectable players can handle both PAL and NTSC discs, and perform the necessary standards conversion to enable you to view PAL discs on NTSC hardware, and vice versa.

jlhoots, you could probably pick up a cheap PAL-capable, region-free player for around what you paid for the DVD. Check out VideoHelp.com for some info on region-free players.

Can anyone recommend a DVD player that is region free and accepts PAL and NTSC? I want to buy something that plays all DVDs. My current player is on the fritz anyway, so I want to get something that can handle everything to replace it.

My favorite, the Oppo DV-980H, has unfortunately been discontinued, and Oppo is only manufacturing Blu-Ray players now. The DV-980H is even difficult to find used, probably because everyone I know that's ever bought one has no intention of ever giving it up.

I've never personally used them, but other people I know have recommended this vendor for region-free/multistandard players. And as I mentioned earlier, VideoHelp.com is worth checking out (search by model number or manufacturer for info on specific players).

Thanks.

I know that I had posted this question elsewhere, but found it since by talking to other people that I need both region-free and PAL/NTSC compatible. So is 'region-free/multistandard' the technical term for this dream machine I am looking for? The guy at Myer Emco told me about Oppo - bummer I missed out on it.

Has anyone used the vendor recommended by Dave?

Thanks,

Bertrand.
