I failed to get really excited about the launching of the iPad. Not sure I'll be looking for to purchase the new gadget...

From The New York Times

I don't know that I'll need an iPad anytime soon, but its functionality as a music player seems like a very minor decision point. I watched the keynote address, and thought the thing was pretty impressive.

The whole "cloud" thing leaves me cold, and the idea of paying to listen you "your" music via a subscription is borderline ludicrous to me.

"...to move your trusty old music collection onto this wonder gadget and take it with you to work, or on vacation, you’ll have to pull out a U.S.B. sync cable, plug the device into your PC and transfer those music files over."

Oh, the horror?

"Apple iPad music upload problems"...

After further thought... upload "problems"? Is the idea of synching obsolete now? I forget what the iPad with the largest capacity will hold, but for us music obsessives, wouldn't we just bring an iPod (or two) when we travel anyway? I think I'm confused.

Without having seen or used one can't really comment on the iPad but I think it might be useful as an e-book reader. The Kindle which I use for work is not as ergonomically well designed as almost any Apple product.

(I can't believe that "ergonomically" got through spell check. Is it really a word?)

I should think so! An empty house; computer left on - might be burned down when you return. Or, if burgled, the contents of your bank account might be missing.

Wow! Rather dramatic!

... To put this another way, why would anybody avoid buying an iPad (which goes SO far beyond being a music-playing device) because music files have to be synched with a cable as with an iPod (which is... such a bother? so obsolete a procedure?)? In addition, are these wireless services even going to provide all the obscure music that so many of us listen to?

If I'm not making any sense here, somebody please set me straight.

I agree with you about the iPad and it's possibilities beyond music.

The music is theoretically the music that you already own, so there's

no waiting for these services to provide the obscure - as you say -

music because it will already be uploaded from your collection

(and other collections as well). I think the "problems" alluded to

in the subject line are the problems that music companies will have

with your ability to listen to something in the cloud that you don't

already own. But, this ability has been available (disregarding radio's

history if you will) for quite a few years, so it's really an Aunt Sally.

Okay, but brownie (and I don't mean to pick on brownie, because this is a pretty complex issue) said he wasn't going to buy an iPad because of the problems, which still doesn't quite add up for me (an iPad is not even close to being just a music player; my entire music collection will fit on my two 160GB ipods, which I can take along with and iPad and not even use the iPad as a music device; and, I don't see brownie with his head in "the cloud" anyway ;)).

I did not say I would not buy an iPad. I said I was not sure I would consider buying one. I may change my mind (or not) when I have a chance to check one when it becomes available to the general public. And check all its possibilities with my head in the clouds (or not!).

Even with its shortcomings, I am pretty happy right now with my iPhone :)
