Dave James Posted April 8, 2010 Report Posted April 8, 2010 Opinions on this recording? I've seen it described as modal and as soul jazz. Kind of an odd combination. It has two versions of the title track which, if I understand correctly, is something of a funk piece, perhaps along the lines of The Sidewinder? Not sure about any of the other tunes although some of the other titles are self-explanatory. Any comments on the vocals? They're by an artist I'm not familiar with by the name of Eva Harris. How many tracks have vocals? Thanks. Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 8, 2010 Report Posted April 8, 2010 Wish I still had my vinyl to answer your question about vocals - since I don't even remember them, I am going to say there is at most two tunes, probably only one. I will say that the sound isn't the greatest, I recall a sort of harshness that wasn't very appealing. The PJs are all much better than this, and this is marginally better than the "Plays Hollywood and Broadway" album. I would recommend much more highly his Fresh Sound recording, Peace for Love. Quote
porcy62 Posted April 8, 2010 Report Posted April 8, 2010 (edited) Just listened to it. I like it. Not the best Curtis' record, and yes, not the best recording, but not such bad. The vocal is on one track, "Please Send Me Someone To Love", a Percy Mayfield's blues, the least interesting track of the record, IMMV. The double title track is a Sidewinder's funk piece, other two tracks are latin stuff, very good latin stuff, and there is a long 'coltranesque' Amy's original "Shaker Heights' where Curtis plays soprano, that he plays on another tune too. The cover is ugly. Edited April 8, 2010 by porcy62 Quote
kh1958 Posted April 8, 2010 Report Posted April 8, 2010 I like the record also--it's not Katanga, but it's still pretty good. Quote
