He was the first "jazz" musician I met. In LA. I was 13. He, my father and I had dinner in a bar.

First time for that too :-)

After rehearsal, before the concert. He was a pleasant guy but that's all I remember. 1961.

I'm actually his niece. You met him one year before he died.

Yes, John and my whole family were from Dubuque, Iowa. I'm hoping the Dubuque Symphony is going to perform John's "Jazz Symphony". They're interested in doing that.
