chewy, all you have to do is read the liner notes by Ira Gitler. He explains it all about the charts.

If you have a 1st pressing read the line just below the charts:

Main influence is in caps; strong influence has first letter capitalised; lesser influence in lower case.

In Mobley's case, Gitler says Parker and Rollins were strong influences.

I remember those charts engendered several discussions when the album was released!

This was on the back of my old UK Esquire issue of this record. I was a teenager at the time and fairly new to jazz, I found it confusing and not helpful at all.

if someone as obscure as Seldon Powell is included... is this a big chart? is there any way to see all of it online?

Seldon Powell was not that obscure when the album came out back in 1956 (Clifford Brown's death is not mentioned yet in the liner notes). He was one of the tenor hopefuls at the time.

The other tenors mentioned are Stitt, Rollins, Getz, Gray, Heath, Rouse, Foster, Eager, J.R. Monterose, Mobley, Coltrane, Gordon and Urso.

Not really a chart but just a table which appears beneath the liner notes. Gitler mentions that lack of space prevented him from including 'Pres' disciples (Sims, Cohn) and their little brothers (Perkins, Kamuca).
