chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted April 11, 2010 Report Posted April 11, 2010 what in the world is this. what does ira gitler think he is doing, HANK IS INVOLVED: he has a section, that says: Parker Rollins -------- Mobley can someone PLEASE decode this for me or tell me, since it is over 50 yrs old right im sure SOMEONE here knows what im talking about.....WHAT IS UP WITH THIS Quote
brownie Posted April 11, 2010 Report Posted April 11, 2010 chewy, all you have to do is read the liner notes by Ira Gitler. He explains it all about the charts. If you have a 1st pressing read the line just below the charts: Main influence is in caps; strong influence has first letter capitalised; lesser influence in lower case. In Mobley's case, Gitler says Parker and Rollins were strong influences. I remember those charts engendered several discussions when the album was released! Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted April 11, 2010 Author Report Posted April 11, 2010 i bet, hank wasnt inflenced by rollins what is he talking about. if anything rollins is influenced by mobley, but evn that is a stretch-- they are both influenced by charlie parker Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted April 12, 2010 Author Report Posted April 12, 2010 um whos the Powell, in Getz STITT -------- Powell Quote
JohnS Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 This was on the back of my old UK Esquire issue of this record. I was a teenager at the time and fairly new to jazz, I found it confusing and not helpful at all. Quote
Niko Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 if someone as obscure as Seldon Powell is included... is this a big chart? is there any way to see all of it online? Quote
king ubu Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 Gee, I loved that one, but have sold off the single CD a long time ago and didn't think to make a photocopy... Quote
king ubu Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 From the liners of which album is this again? Chewy and his crappy thread-titles... "Tenor Madness" or "Plus Four"? Quote
brownie Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 Plus Four! Only real experts KNOW what chewy's talking about Quote
brownie Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 if someone as obscure as Seldon Powell is included... is this a big chart? is there any way to see all of it online? Seldon Powell was not that obscure when the album came out back in 1956 (Clifford Brown's death is not mentioned yet in the liner notes). He was one of the tenor hopefuls at the time. The other tenors mentioned are Stitt, Rollins, Getz, Gray, Heath, Rouse, Foster, Eager, J.R. Monterose, Mobley, Coltrane, Gordon and Urso. Not really a chart but just a table which appears beneath the liner notes. Gitler mentions that lack of space prevented him from including 'Pres' disciples (Sims, Cohn) and their little brothers (Perkins, Kamuca). Quote
king ubu Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 Plus Four! Only real experts KNOW what chewy's talking about I do know... but forgot which album it was as I gave aways the OJCCDs once I got the Prestige box. Quote
