jostber Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 Anyone heard this new release that came a couple of days ago? Any clue of the sound quality of these recordings? Quote
John L Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 I have this on Bird's Eyes. I assume that the sound quality is the same - which is rather rough and variable, moving from good to poor. That said, there are complete performances here, as opposed to the usual heads-Bird solos that you get on a lot of private live Bird recordings. So you get to hear a lot of fine Kenny Dorham along with Bird. In fact, I can't think of any other good source of Kenny Dorham with Bird, outside of a handful of tracks recorded for Verve. Max is also high in the mix here and clearly audible. But this is very far from Hi Fi. Quote

bichos Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 (edited) is this one of the labels from andora? so there must be 15 tracks from salle pleyel, paris and 8 from roubaix. i don´t think that there is something new and unissued and i suppose that the sound is not better than all other issues (spotlite, philology, bird box and some others). the only source for new material (or better sound) is the ina archive. but so far there is nothing on their site from the jazz festival 1949. keep boppin´ marcel Edited May 16, 2010 by bichos Quote
bichos Posted May 16, 2010 Report Posted May 16, 2010 to answer my own questions: yes, it´s on the "rlr" label and there is nothing new on it. as a bonus there are the soundtracks of three tv-broadcast with bird on it. october 50: "broadway open house" (available only on philology) with milton delug, accordeon. from march 49 "adventures in jazz" with miles, max kaminsky, kai winding, will bradley, joe marsala, mike caluccio, joe sullivan, max roach, specs powell. (formerly on stash and philology). february 49 (metronome award show of 1948) with shorty sherock, sidney bechet, joe bushkin, chubby jackson and george wettling. and the "lady bird" from november 1950 (also from paris) with maurice mouflard (only one "f" in his name!) and his orchestra when bird came back from sweden. let´s see if they have the long version of the "blues finale" on it. this is superb music and rare!! keep boppin´ marcel Quote
Pete C Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 For me the best thing about the Paris recordings is hearing Bird and Bechet jamming. But for my money the Sweden recordings are much more rewarding overall. Quote
