I have a feeling that the vocal is the same as the blues which I included on my blues set - unintentionally hilarious, sounds like one of the Wild and Crazy Guys.

still, he was one of the greats.

Marcel:

Based on the description from the Dragon website, my guess is that the track with Stan Hasselgard singing is new to CD (unless Allen issued it) but is not previously unissued. I have the Gotta Have More Money/Hortense pairing on 78 (Constellation 501) by the Johnny White Quartet. Both sides contain band vocals that do not include Hasselgard singing (since you can hear his clarinet obbligato work). The first side (Gotta Have More Money) also has a short vocal break (actually it's more spoken than sung) with a Swedish accent that probably is Hasselgard.

Bruyninckx doesn't list the recording but does include two sides by the Johnny White Quintet (Flying Foam/Going After You) that were originally on Cupol and which also appear to be on the new CD.

just learned from the dragon records homepage that there is a new release with stan hasselgard´s california records (including a few unissued tracks-one with hasselgard singing!!!!!!) :excited:

David:

No piano on the two Johnny White Quartet sides (Gotta Have More Money/Hortense): Johnny White (vibes), Stan Hasselgard (cl), Rollo Garberg (b), and Guy Scalise (g).

Thanks, Marcel, I'll check this out--I like the roll call of piano players, too (Dodo, Arnold Ross, and Jimmy Rowles).

Anyone who hasn't fully explored the Dragon catalog is doing themselves a disservice. Not only will you find multiple recordings from the very best Swedish players, but a nice assortment of American jazzmen as well.

Has anyone seen this for sale (as a CD, not a download)? The usual suspects don't seem to have it. I can't tell how much of the stuff with Wardell Gray is reissue - looks like most/all.

Very interesting news, though it is not easy to find out which of the tracks are actually new (and not only new to CD) as some tracks seem to exist in several (live/non-commercial) versions so you do not always know which is which from the track listing on the Dragon website.

I'd certainly like to know definitely which of the tracks are not only new to any previously released Dragon and Phontastic CDs featuring Stan but are also not to be found on Spotlite SPJ134, Cupol CLPN343, Dragon DRLP163, DRLP16, DRLP25 and DRLP29.

Am not really sure whether those two Johnny White tracks really warrant buying the CD but oh well ... the for once completist might win out again ... ;)

My interest exactly. I have all of these previous Dragon and Phontastic things.

for me, it´s a must to buy: i have never heard the first four tracks and need the last two. (i think they are the capitol alternates with red norvo). in between are the jubilee´s. i suppose the sound quality is very good. and dragon is a label that always wake up my interest. the hasselgard releases from them on lp and cd are always high quality issues. good liner notes and accurate.

here is a fine stan hasselgard tribute site with discography:

I agree that the last two sides are likely the alternates from his Capitol session. Those are on the Mosaic Capitol Jazz Sessions box.

Dragon does fine work, and this new issue sounds worthwhile.

Thanks for the link to the Hasselgard tribute site. I'll check it out shortly to see what other odd items might be out there.

As an aside, I remember seeing a documentary film on Hasselgard many years ago, perhaps at an IAJRC convention. Kept hoping that it would be released somewhere. Anyone else know anything about it? Maybe it's mentioned on that site...

Of course it is. Look under "Hasselgard movie". ;)

yes, the documentary "hasselgard story" by jonas sima is very good. i have it on vhs but it´s now out also on dvd. a very touching movie. including the only known footage of hasselgard! sima is searching for june eckstine (who drove the car during the fatal accident) but she don´t want talk to him. (btw. bob redcross, yes t h i s bob redcross was on the back seat and is also interviewed). a great film!

Somewhere on some other site (can't recall where) I read that somebody who did manage to talk to June Eckstine about this accident in recent times more or less only obtained the statement that this accident "was the tragedy of my life". Little wonder she doesn't want to go into all this again.

As for Bob Redcross, somewhere on the site linked by Bichos there is a still from the movie that shows Bob Redcross when he had returned to the exact location of the accident.

Thanks. I'll have to track down a copy. I've been wanting to see this again for a long time. Good to know that it came out.

Allen:

I checked some on line movie data bases. The ones I checked don't show Barbara Carroll as appearing in the film. Those that do include: Benny Goodman, Buddy DeFranco, Max Roach, Chuck Wayne, Billy Bauer, Arnold Ross, Patti Page, Sol Yaged, and Putte Wickman. Of course, they may not have the complete cast listed.

fot the movie did they interview Barbara Carroll, who made some nice records with Hasselgarde?
