Head Man Posted July 25, 2010 Report Posted July 25, 2010 (edited) Does anyone have any further information on these two releases that are up for pre-ordering at Amazon? They appear to be coming out on the Candid label: Tubby Hayes - Inventivity Ronnie Scott - And His American Friends Edited July 25, 2010 by Head Man Quote
sidewinder Posted July 25, 2010 Report Posted July 25, 2010 (edited) From the Les Tomkins archive so presumably recorded at Ronnie Scotts early to mid-60s? (My guess is that it might be a mix-mash of various lineups on both disks). Edited July 25, 2010 by sidewinder Quote
jazzbo Posted July 25, 2010 Report Posted July 25, 2010 (edited) I picked up the Hayes. One disc features Cat Anderson sitting in and the second Sal Nistico and Albert Stinson. Jimmy Duecher is on both. There's a short interview with Nistico. Sound is so much better than previous Ronnie Scott recordings released on cd. www.worldsrecords.com has had it available for over a week. Edited July 25, 2010 by jazzbo Quote

Is the playing at a high quality level? Do you recommend this CD? Quote
jazzbo Posted July 25, 2010 Report Posted July 25, 2010 I hesitate these days to make a statement about "playing at a high quality level" these days as there can be so many contentious conversations as a result. And I find that I really like music at different "quality levels" than others may, and don't always identify these levels TO MYSELF. I'd say that if you are a Hayes collector and fan, you'll want this. Ditto an official "Nistico Nut." Quote

Perhaps the phrase "playing at a high quality level" was not the best choice of words. It sounds a bit too "factual" However, I hope you feel comfortable sharing your own personal subjective opinions about music that you like or don't like. It is that sort of thing that makes Organissimo a more interesting site - at last for me. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 25, 2010 Report Posted July 25, 2010 I share my opinions less and less for a number of reasons. Quote
JSngry Posted July 25, 2010 Report Posted July 25, 2010 So Sal's on it, eh?I mean, playing-wise...obviously he's on the CD... Quote
jazzbo Posted July 25, 2010 Report Posted July 25, 2010 (edited) He acquits himself well. One long "Stella" with Albert Stinson on bass is pretty hot. He's also on a longish interview included. Edited July 26, 2010 by jazzbo Quote
JSngry Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 That's a strong selling point for me. "Acquits himself well", does he? Quote
jazzbo Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 No offense to Benny Goodman, but they would all do better with a few other drummers I could think of. Benny just isn't really giving them much. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 Hey, I was wrong above, it's "Just Friends" where Sal impressed me, he's not on "Stella by Starlight" (Tubby and Jimmy do really well on that one, very brisk pace.) Quote
