JSngry Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 Quality at "for collectors only" level, but LORD have mercy, the energy is palpable, as is the sense of time and place...Eddie may be known as "the crazy one", but Charlie's organ solos have always gone waaaaaaayyyyy out there. Two prime examples here, and perfectly audible. Don't know how commercilayy available this is, even at bootleg level, but...this, as a document, not a documentary, is the real deal. Barring anybody uncovering home movies with audio of a club date somewhere during this time, hey...feel the power. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zAMjFzafAI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eozZ_f9YVk0&feature=related Quote
DukeCity Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 Nice. How is it that the folks in the crowd are not dancing, or at least up on their feet? Maybe we're seeing video of a few hours into the event? I DL'ed Eddie Palmieri's "Live at Sing Sing" from about this vintage, including "Muñeca", and it's smokin'! Quote
JSngry Posted September 11, 2010 Author Report Posted September 11, 2010 Nice. How is it that the folks in the crowd are not dancing, or at least up on their feet? Maybe we're seeing video of a few hours into the event? I wondered about that too...several thoughts crossed my mind, none of them anything I'd put too much money money on - maybe because this was a "concert", and you could see these guys in a dance environment anytime? Not sure if the idea of salsa concerts aimed at "the community" was really an established on by then or not...one comment on YouTube described the event as the "Woodstock of Salsa", not sure how that was meant, and if it was an observation from afar or from one who was there...then there's the time, 1972, "salsa" was beginning to emerge as a lifestyle with some socio-politico implications in NYC, so it would only be right to be "serious" into the music...also, note the male/female ratio of the audience...you know chicks, they wanna go out, not go to some park to sit down ... no idea how late in the afternoon it was then, nor who else was on the bill...but the end of that second clip shows that dancing or not, there was electricity in the air that extended beyond the bandstand. JSngry Posted September 12, 2010 Author Report Posted September 12, 2010 It is, and Andy's on bass. Quote
JSngry Posted July 26, 2014 Author Report Posted July 26, 2014 Holy shit Charlie Palmieri, holy shit. Quote
paul secor Posted July 27, 2014 Report Posted July 27, 2014 Hard to imagine that two older guys - Puente and Palmieri - could have that much energy. And Max Romeo made a nice laid back contrast to that energy - actually a different kind of energy. Thanks! Quote

Charlie takes it way, way OUT into OUTER SPACE!!! And it sounds so damn good with the entire band churning underneath. Quote
JSngry Posted November 20, 2021 Author Report Posted November 20, 2021 Lalo Rodriguez giving back just as good as he gets, too! A lesser singer would have either gotten killed or, at best, gotten carried along for the ride. That combination was electrifying then, and whoa, they kept that going! I only speak minimal Spanish, but with that type of voice riding on top... that's just pure music! And Charlie Palmieri, holy shit indeed! Quote
mikeweil Posted November 20, 2021 Report Posted November 20, 2021 These guys know what they're doing. From the same gig: Quote

JSngry Posted November 23, 2021 Author Report Posted November 23, 2021 Credited but not really broadcast was that Rene Hernandez did those arrangements. Probably as directed by EP, but still...que rica esta musica!!! Rene Hernandez was an unsung giant, imo. Quote
