I've been listening to a couple of Ruby Braff recordings with Sam Margolis on tenor. These are "Ruby Braff Special" (Vanguard) and "Swinging with Ruby Braff" (Jazztone). Margolis seems to have been a player much influenced by Lester Young, but much more upbeat -- without the eerie neuroses of Young. Does anyone know anything about Margolis and about what other recordings he played on?

He's on a number of Braff dates from 1954-82 (Storyville/Black Lion, Bethlehem, Verve, Chiaroscuro and Red Baron). He's on a George Wein date on Atlantic and a couple of dates with Nat Pierce (Zim and Keyynote).

Seems more like a Freeman than a Young player to me (with or without possible playing neuroses). Boston man, buddy of Braff and a good player!
