So I guess Steve Coleman is doing something tonight at The Jazz Gallery in lower Manhattan:

"Steve Coleman Presents"

Monday, February 28th, 2011 | 9:00 p.m. - Midnight

$15.00 | $10.00 for Members and Students with Valid I.D., buy ticket

The Jazz Gallery is pleased to continue "Steve Coleman Presents," our weekly composers workshop with master alto saxophonist/improviser/composer/bandleader Steve Coleman. The current Monday workshop season runs through June 20, 2011. Please check www.jazzgallery.org for all confirmed future dates.

In previous seasons, this series has functioned more like a class than a concert. This time, Steve plans to focus more on the performance aspect. So think of this as an informal gig, but with more talking and presentation than a typical concert.

All the same, the workshop will continue to offer a unique opportunity to explore Steve Coleman's musical and philosophical ideas, with the format and focus varying subtly from week to week. All are welcome.

Then in a month, he is doing a show at the Chicago Cultural Center:

Mon 3/28 6:30pm Chicago Cultural Center - New Music: Steve Coleman and Five Elements

I should be at that show, work and weather permitting.

I saw Steve's Five Elements group at the Jazz Gallery last night. Very good - especially when Steve is improvising, and I really liked the rhythm section, Marcus Gilmore is awesome. However, my enjoyment was disrupted by the heat - the airconditioning at the JG was too feeble (though noisy enough to annoy the musicians). And I picked up his two Pi recordings for $25!

been far too long since he's played in UK.

Wish I was in Chicago or NY

I just heard he's in the UK in November. He's with Dave Virelles (piano) and Kassa Overall (drums) according to the Turner Sims (Southampton) brochure.

Yep, got my ticket for London already. Thanks for the line-up which is intriguing as I've only ever seen Five Elements before.

Mind you, i'd happily attend whatever the line-up.

New album on Pi on pre-order
