Shawn Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 I have an Airport Express that I no longer require in my current computer setup, it was only used for about 9 months.. GREAT wireless router, works with either Mac or PC. Has the Air Tunes capability, plug it in behind your stereo and run an audio cable, then you can stream music from iTunes from any computer in the house to the same stereo. All original packaging included, I reset it back to factory defaults so it's like new. Retail - $99, Used on Amazon - $69 $50 to a good home. Quote

I can vouch for the device - very easy to use and is a great way to extend the range of an existing router. I have never tried the Airport Express to stereo idea ... will be setting it up tonight! Shawn Posted April 26, 2011 Author Report Posted April 26, 2011 The quality of the streaming audio is stunning. It bypasses the computer soundcard entirely, iTunes broadcasts the data digitally to the router, the DA converter is in the router itself. It allows you to use iTunes to play music in another room, while still being able to use your computer soundcard for other things at the same time. Quote

So what kind of interconnect do you use between the router and your stereo? Edited April 26, 2011 by Eric Quote
jazzbo Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 I think lately he's been using one I loaned to him to try, an Audioquest 1/8" to dual RCA cable. Quote
Eric Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 Hmmm, got to thinking ... I have two computers on my network with itunes - an Apple and a Dell. I wonder how the Airport Express will "know" which library I want to use (maybe it defaults to the Apple)? Guess I will find out. Quote
Shawn Posted April 26, 2011 Author Report Posted April 26, 2011 iTunes will recognize the Express, a drop down menu is added to the bottom right corner of the iTunes window that lets you select the output (computer or Express). I've never used it with multiple computers, but I have both OSX and Windows 7 on my Mac Mini, both versions of iTunes worked with the Express. Quote
jlhoots Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 Sounds good. I wish I knew what you were all talking about. Quote

OK, so I got it all set up with my Mac ... was working perfectly ... Herbie's "Tell Me A Bedtime Story" no less So then I went to my PC, directed it to the Airport Express (via the drop down menu) and received a very polite, Apple-like message that said the speakers were currently in use. Now somebody buy Shawn's Airport Express :tup PS Controlling it all through my iPad ... I think I just beat Sonos at their own game (absent the music services) PSS Check that ... I am now streaming Wolfgang's Vault via my iPad to the Airport Express to my stereo ... Springsteen Winterland 1978 ... was also able to stream XM Radio, Pandora, really any Internet radio station to the Express ... so cool :excited: Edited April 27, 2011 by Eric Quote

I don't suppose it comes with a plug adapter for use outside of North America? Bit of a long shot I guess... Jim (in NZ) Quote
Shawn Posted April 27, 2011 Author Report Posted April 27, 2011 *on hold for Amir* Thanks! re: adapters. Apple does make a variety of adapters that can be swapped out for different countries, they are sold separately though. Eric - glad you got yours hooked up, I had a feeling there would be an error message if you attempted to send multiple signals. The only reason I no longer use mine is because my computer is now part of my entertainment center, so the audio connection is right there. These Mac Mini's with the built in HDMI output are amazingly versatile devices. Quote

And while the iPads and the Macs are pricey, it is nice to be able to pick up an Airport Express or Apple TV for $99. Before I read this thread, I had been using a separate Airport Express simply to extend the range of my primary router. I had bought a 2nd one that was just sitting in a drawer. Now it is doing amazing things Quote
