Durium Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 During the 1950s it seemed to have been a real obsession for jazz musicians to make a recording ... with strings. Now a days, strings are made in a digital way, settled jazz musicians seem to dream about making their own big band recording ... with their own compositions or arrangements: expensive projects. Roy Hargrove did two years ago and this month Christian McBride releases his first Big Band album, entitled The Good Feeling. McBride's Big Band debut on the Mack Avenue label has become a valuable and a must-have and, for your information, no audible strings at all ( except Christian's excellent double bass of course. Tom in RI Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 Thanks for the headsup, I'll be looking for this one. Quote
shaft Posted October 3, 2011 Report Posted October 3, 2011 Listening on Spotify it really sounds like a great album - and I'm quite picky regarding Big Band recordings. Good Sound quality too ;-) Quote
colinmce Posted October 3, 2011 Report Posted October 3, 2011 I'll check it out, too. I loved Emergence, Roy Hargrove's big band album. Quote
John Tapscott Posted October 3, 2011 Report Posted October 3, 2011 Listening on Spotify it really sounds like a great album - and I'm quite picky regarding Big Band recordings. Good Sound quality too ;-) That's good to hear. The Gerald Wilson Mack Avenue Big Band Cd's have been inconsistent their recording quality - the L.A. Band - very good; New York Band - not so much IMO. BTW, the new Ron Carter Great Big Band CD on Sunnyside is very good, IMO. Quote
shaft Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 Ordered the CD from Amazon for the full 1411kbps experience Quote
Free For All Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 I like the writing and players on this recording, but unfortunately I'm not a fan of the vocalist- too many pitch problems IMO (and some awkward phrasing as she tries to fit into the arrangements). Overall though I enjoy this record and would recommend it. Quote
JETman Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 Personally, I find that many of today's big band recordings try too hard. They sound bombastic and loud, with a sense of "forced" swing that kind of misses the boat sailed by the likes of Duke and the Count. Quote
shaft Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 Well there will never be new Big Bands like Duke or Basie. Let´s face it. This CD is however well above par with modern big bands recordings. Quote
