chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 8, 2011 Report Posted November 8, 2011 (edited) hi my question is: so we all know rvg recorded in stereo only after 1958, but was the title of Leeway only issued at first in mono only. or are there early stereo issues of it. what i got today is the liberty issue, non vangelder stamped. it says on the jacket electronically rechanneled but as we know liberty plunked that on all the jackets regardless if it was in mono, fake stereo ,or real stereo. this liberty issue of leeway still sells for a ton now days, and the one i got was mint, and only 20 bucks, so i went for it. chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 8, 2011 Author Report Posted November 8, 2011 listening right now, from my ltd knowledge (no hardcore bn/liberty datasheets, every copy of every pressing of every record, etc)- i guess this liberty issue is the 1st stereo issue, rvg never made a stamper for the stereo cause it was only issued in mono only originally (from what i GATHER....* need conf of this from u guys).....it sounds good. i have no rvg mono to compare it to, but i would even bet it sounds a lil better cause mine is mint and any leeway orig pressing i can afford prob will be messed up. im pretty happy with this right now Quote
brownie Posted November 8, 2011 Report Posted November 8, 2011 I have a Blue Note Records catalog from 1966 that lists Leeway (BLP-4034) as a mono release only. Same for the earlier Moggie albums. Next one after Leeway was The Sidewinder. That one (BLP-4157/84157) is listed in mono and stereo releases. Same for the subsequent ones. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 8, 2011 Author Report Posted November 8, 2011 (edited) whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa, brownie you have a Blue Note Records WHAT-a-log? really? is it like a pamphlet? its from 1966? wow. what does it say abt hank mobley? are any of his listed in there as mono only. wow. how big is this thing? how come ive never seen one? how come i dont have one too? how come i dont have one too for every year? how come i dont have one from every year autographed by jackie mclean. i would of had him sign that instead of my blue note photography book when i met him in 2001. thats right, i met jackie mclean! brownie i drove from seattle to san francisco for this show, in one swoop, it was flipping crazy i have noticed i spelled lee morgan wrong in title of thread, gorts can you please fix that, sry, thanks Edited November 8, 2011 by chewy Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 8, 2011 Author Report Posted November 8, 2011 THE MONO BUTTON works really well on this particular lp. you click it and lees trumpet goes, on the last track for example, from hard left, to everywhere- it sounds good. i hardly ever really use the mono button, but when the tpts panned hard left and comming out, essentially in "mono" out of just left speaker, tapping the mono button allows it to be "MORE STEREO" for me, by leaving it "IN MONO"...does that make sense Quote

It's a 8.5" by 5.5" brochure (36 pages) that lists 12" albums and 45rpm singles. It came out right after Liberty bought the label and lists all the available albums (with cover photos, musicians and titles of each release) up to Jimmy Smith's 'Bucket' (4229). Nothing but a catalogue list... Can't remember where I picket it up, probably at the BN 61st offices when I visited the place in 1967. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 8, 2011 Author Report Posted November 8, 2011 oh yea! brownies famous trip to the blue note offices! where u saw roy haynes get mad cause they wouldnt give him a free copy of song for my father, lol Quote
brownie Posted November 8, 2011 Report Posted November 8, 2011 Yesss... that one! Guess I got the catalogue after being polite with the Lion and the Wolff Also bought a number of BNs from the original fountain that day (and on another return visit a few days later! For what it's worth, the catalogue is pretty complete but does not list any Tina Brooks (not even 'True Blue' which was out by then). Quote
kh1958 Posted November 8, 2011 Report Posted November 8, 2011 Fred Cohen's Blue Note Pressings guide says that the first stereo issue of Leeway was a Liberty pressing. There's brief chapter with Rudy Van Gelder's comments regarding mono-stereo recording. All recordings in mono up to May 8, 1957. From May 9, 1957 to October 30, 1958, he recorded in both mono and two track tape at the same time. Mono taping was dropped after October 30, 1958. He notes that the studio in Hackensack had only a single monitor. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 8, 2011 Author Report Posted November 8, 2011 would love to see that book. what is the complete list of Liberty pressings which issue the stereo mix for the 1st time: so far i have: -Byrd In Flight -Whistle Stop -Leeway all 3 sound **incredible**. why do you think only certain sesions were issued in both mono and stereo, and others just in mono? for example i have early blue train, and monanin's, in stereo.... chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 10, 2011 Author Report Posted November 10, 2011 i have never seen on the net (or in person) a soul station, classic cover, liberty issue. just "crazy cover". is there a classic cover stereo liberty issue? or just crazy cover. chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 10, 2011 Author Report Posted November 10, 2011 *re- thank you for posting that i never knew to look out of a stereo liberty grants first stand, chuck is right towards the end of the list its not what i was lookin for, re- gigolo,....that was rel. just on liberty in stereo except promo only mono. i was trying to track stuff down in your list like grants 1st stand: bn monos that i can be on the lookout for for the 1st stereo issue, but nonvangelder stamped on liberty. cause apparently i can find these easier. i have african beat vol 1 as well ive neglected to mention. i wont be actively searchin for a grants 1st stand liberty stereo but ive never seen one i dont believe, (or maybe, but i cant really recall)..cause i have the 1st issue and both the singles for the album. i kind of regret that one of them i payed like freaking 40 bucks for, when i was freaking out about it and thought there was a snowalls chance in hell of gettin a lp-length cut of it for under 400 big ones. then i got one for like 50 bucks. ""check please!"" Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 15, 2011 Author Report Posted November 15, 2011 picked up a near mint lib. stereo GOIN' UP today....should be real good Quote
