peterintoronto Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 I would have said that looks more like 1970's Blue Note. Think of later Lee Morgan and Lou Donaldson with pretty females on the covers! Quote
brownie Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 Can't remember many Verve albums that looked like those ones. Don't think they were really typical of the Verve covers... Quote
JSngry Posted January 9, 2012 Author Report Posted January 9, 2012 (edited) 60s poppy Verves. Many of them had those expansively feminine fonts. Edited January 9, 2012 by JSngry Quote
brownie Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 This just shows we were not brought up on the same Verve Verve of my generation were produced by Norman Granz and had none (or very very few) of those type Quote
Don Brown Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 The typical Verve album cover for me is one that has David Stone Martin artwork. But, like brownie says a couple of posts back, that was when Verve was still in the hands of its founder, Norman Granz. Perhaps brownie and I are a little older. I know for me those later Verve covers could not compare with the ones from the 1950s. Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 There were plenty of non-DSM Verve covers from the Norman Granz era thogh they did not have those femme selling arguments yet . But as for (later) Verve lookalikes, European vinyl hoarders might look among 60s FONTANA covers. Will try to dig out a few among my vinyl. Quote
Don Brown Posted January 9, 2012 Report Posted January 9, 2012 Well, Steve, you're correct, not all the early Verves had David Stone Martin artwork, but many of the non-DSM covers used Herman Leonard's photographs of the artists. Quote
