Head Man Posted January 22, 2012 Report Posted January 22, 2012 (edited) I'm part-way through Jimmy Heath's autobiography "I Walked With Giants" and he refers to records he made with Donald Byrd for Blue Note in 1963 that "weren't released then because of problems between Donald and Al Lion". I don't recall ever hearing Jimmy play on a Blue Note release. Does anyone know what recording he's referring to here and whether it was ever released? Plus, can anyone shed any light on the problems that Jimmy refers to between Donald Byrd and Alfred Lion? I seem to recall reading that Donald Byrd fell out with a lot of his friends at one time and actually gave up playing jazz. Edited January 22, 2012 by Head Man Quote
sonnymax Posted January 22, 2012 Report Posted January 22, 2012 Jimmy played on Byrd's Blue Note sessions of May 20, 1963 & November 18, 1964. I don't know how many titles were recorded those two days, but three tracks were included on the CD reissues of Mustang! & Blackjack. Quote

Head Man Posted January 23, 2012 Author Report Posted January 23, 2012 Thanks guys. I guess it must have been the May 20, 1963 session that Jimmy was referring to. BTW I wonder what ever happened to that Horace Silver Tentette session from April 11-12, 1963? Does anyone know why that one has never seen the light of day? Quote
