ghost of miles Posted January 20, 2004 Report Posted January 20, 2004 Hey all, I'm doing a two-part special on J.J. Johnson in commemoration of what would have been his 80th birthday this Thursday (Jan. 22). The program will feature commentary from David Baker and a wealth of J.J. music, including early arrangements for Basie and Benny Carter, sides from Jay & Kai, "Poem for Brass," a few cuts from the Mosaic box, some music from ACROSS 110TH STREET (scored by J.J.), and much more. The shows air Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30-5 pm. The live webcast link can be found in the upper lefthand corner here: WFIU Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 21, 2004 Author Report Posted January 21, 2004 Up for broadcast in about 15-20 minutes. Quote
Dmitry Posted January 21, 2004 Report Posted January 21, 2004 Is that the same David Baker who played w/George Russell and is currently a professor at Indiana University? Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 21, 2004 Author Report Posted January 21, 2004 Yes, one and the same. He'll be a part of tomorrow's program as well... talking about meeting JJ at Lennox and some other things. He's a very busy man, but once in awhile I get to interview him. Quote
pryan Posted January 21, 2004 Report Posted January 21, 2004 Nice show, listening right now. I agree with Baker, that album w/ Freddie (J.J. INC) is pretty awesome. Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 21, 2004 Author Report Posted January 21, 2004 Thanks, Pryan. I'll be doing part 2 tomorrow, picking up with a couple more tracks from the Mosaic that I wasn't able to get to today, and going all the way up to the mid-1990s with THE BRASS ORCHESTRA. There's so much I want to play that I don't have time for... Hell, the Mosaic alone offers far too much great material! Quote
Gary Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 Great show Ghost- I found it very informative , except for the liner notes I have I dont know alot about JJ . And of course the music was outstanding - I'm looking forward to todays show. Quote
White Lightning Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 Great show GoM! I really enjoyed listening to it last night. Thanks!!! Too bad I won't be able to listen to the 2nd part tonight. Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 22, 2004 Author Report Posted January 22, 2004 Up for Part 2 in about 15 minutes. Today would have been J.J.'s 80th birthday. Quote
Jim R Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 Not only is the content of this show terrific, the sound is always great on these WFIU webcasts. I don't know anything about the technical aspects of this, but the "surestream" technology always seems to save the day for me with my (relatively) outdated system. If you have an opportunity to click this on, do NOT pass it up! Thanks as always, GOM. Quote
Uncle Skid Posted January 22, 2004 Report Posted January 22, 2004 ghost -- any chance that this program will be archived? I missed part one. Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 22, 2004 Author Report Posted January 22, 2004 Thanks again for listening and for the input, fellow Organissimos. I was "assembling" the program as I broadcast it, playing the CDs and a CD-R of David Baker's quotes, so it's not really archivable--but I did tape both days, and would be happy to send a dubbed cassette to anybody who's interested (including you, White Lightning--I did get your e-mail!). Dmitry Posted January 24, 2004 Report Posted January 24, 2004 (edited) Yesterday when I was at work a good friend who lives in Indianapolis left a message on my machine, telling me about a great jazz program he was listening to. Today I asked him what it was and he said it was the J.J.Johnson Special! What a coincidence! When I told him it was a bulletin board acquaintance who put it on, he said the program was very well done. My friend usually does not have a whole lot of praise to dish out, so it must have been a good one. He said the music fit in quite smoothly with the spoken portion of the program and he enjoyed the whole thing. He also mentioned David Baker's recollection of seeing J.J. with Miles and J.J. with Coltrane's rhythm section . Who wouldn't want to hear that?! Edited January 24, 2004 by Dmitry Quote

I'm about to begin work on a five-part series about the history of Indiana jazz--David Baker will certainly be a big part of it, esp. when it comes to talking about Indiana Avenue (J.J., Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard, etc.). We're hoping to broadcast it statewide through the public-radio network of stations, so I hope your friend gets a chance to hear it. (Probably won't air till fall 2005.) Thanks again. Quote
