connoisseur series500 Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 I picked up a few cds today from a small local shop where the owner smokes like a chimney. I place them down and listen to them as I type. Shit, if I can't smell the residue of cigarettes and the cd cases are a few feet away! I suppose the smell will go away eventually, but that must be some thick stuff that goes into someone's lungs. Why do the cd cases still smell? Is it nicotine? Is it some foul mixture of combustion and plant? I mean it's godawful! I'm gagging and there is no smoker in my house.... Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted January 25, 2004 Author Report Posted January 25, 2004 well okay, Jim, I get your point. Still stinks. Quote
GregK Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 ugh. There is nothing I hate more than THAT smell. You need to sit them by an open window for a few weeks or something. One of the main reasons I've stopped going to bars/clubs; I hated my clothes and jacket emanating the stale smell of cancer the next day Quote
patricia Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 (edited) Hate to be a downer, but the smoke [or I guess more accurately the nicotine] becomes part of the cover, if it's cardboard. If you've ever smoked and then, after having quit, tried to rid your living space of the effects of it, you will know what I mean. Even if you wash all the curtains and windows, have the furniture and rug steam-cleaned, scrub down all your walls, wash, or dryclean all your clothes and thoroughly clean everything in your space, there are things which you can't really clean. Two of them, unfortunately, are your books, except for the covers and your record sleeves. What I did was use a damp cloth, with a solution of about 1 part to 10 of ammonia and water, wrung out and lightly wiped all the surfaces. That's probably as good as anything. It may not get all of it, but it'll get some of it. Don't use detergent, because it attracts dust. For your CD cases, you should be able to wash them, by hand, with detergent and water, with a wrung-out cloth. Then get another wrung-out cloth, this time, no detergent, and wipe them again, until all the scum is gone. Hope that helps. Worked for me. You actually have an easier job than I did, because my stuff was in my apartment and I was the smoker, until a few months ago. Edited January 25, 2004 by patricia Quote
BERIGAN Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 connoisseur, I know what you mean! I have ditched cd cases if they still smelled after some windex on the outside...new cases are pretty cheap..... Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted January 25, 2004 Author Report Posted January 25, 2004 I can definitely ditch the cd cases, but the liner notes... Quote
Dan Gould Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 I don't know if this will apply to CDs and jewel boxes, but I am sure its worth a shot. Several years ago my wife won some Christmas ornaments on ebay. They arrived absolutely grossly inundated by the stench of cigarette smoke, and believe it or not, the seller denied being a smoker and couldn't imagine why they'd stink. However, someone (maybe on Board Krypton?) suggested that I re-box the ornaments with a bar of soap. I figured if one bar was good, three would be great, so I did as I was told, with Ivory brand soap, and amazingly, the ornaments came out smelling great! Certainly worth a try, I would think. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted January 25, 2004 Author Report Posted January 25, 2004 Interesting... Thanks Dan! Wouldn't want to use that soap afterwards though...YUCK! Quote
JSngry Posted January 25, 2004 Report Posted January 25, 2004 Soooo...if this Organisimo "get together" materialises, smokers will not be welcome? Not that I could have made it anyway, I can't, but I was at least WANTING to... Quote

Not that I could have made it anyway, I can't, but I was at least WANTING to... Nooo, please don't get the wrong impression... It's just a matter of having it in our own homes, that's all. I'd sit down with ya, Jim, and you could smoke all you want. Did not intend this to be a smoker-bashing thread. Quote
Tjazz Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 Just think, if you if listen to some live jazz - they may be smoking too Quote
