ghost of miles Posted January 28, 2004 Report Posted January 28, 2004 I recently discovered this album and have listened to it several times in the past two days. It's a wonderful, laidback effort w/a young Joe Zawinul on piano, Thad Jones on cornet on half of the tracks, Sam Jones or Richard Davis on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. I'd say it's become one of my favorite "Ben-away-from-the-Ellingtonians" records. Recorded in 1963, when Zawinul was playing w/Cannonball--I love the interaction of both of them w/Thad and Philly, too. Many of you probably already know this album, but if you don't--I think you'll like it! Quote
mikeweil Posted January 28, 2004 Report Posted January 28, 2004 That's one on my wish list. Curious how Thad Jones and Ben Webster go together. Too bad they didn't include the alternate takes Orrin Keepnews had added to a Milestone Twofer release of that album in the 1970's! Quote
paul secor Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 I bought it for Ben, but was also pleasantly surprised by Joe Zawinul's playing. Quote

Interestingly, Thad also recorded with Coleman Hawkins on a couple of Crown LPs during this general time frame (1960). It's been some time since I listened to the Hawk LPs, so I can't make an informed comment on his playing there. I'll have to get them out and listen again sometime. So much music - so little time! ghost of miles Posted January 29, 2004 Author Report Posted January 29, 2004 Wow! Didn't know that Hawk, Thad, and Costa had all recorded together--I'll have to run that one down as well. Say, brothers, couldya lend me a couple of fivers... for which I'll gladly pay you back on Friday? Quote
